On Spain’s Mediterranean coast to the south of Valencia, Villajoyosa has been named the “Best Hidden Gem in Europe 2024,” according to European Best Destinations. This ranking recognizes hidden corners of Europe that are perfect for those seeking tranquility, beautiful villages lost in time, and breathtaking natural beauty.
This year, Spain has much to celebrate, as the first two towns on the list are located in the country. While Villajoyosa leads the ranking, right behind it is Ares del Maestrat, less than two hours to the north of Valencia in the province of Castellón.
Europe’s Other Hidden Gems for 2024
Following the two Spanish towns, the list includes Primošten, a village in Croatia located just a one-hour drive from Split. It is succeeded by the Bokodi Floating Village in Hungary and the picturesque Naantali in Finland.
Rounding out the top ten are Bør on Vágars in Denmark’s Faroe Islands, Blåvand in Denmark, Ulm in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Aljezur in Portugal, and Dartlo in Georgia. In 11th place, Castro Urdiales on Spain’s northern Cantabrian coast appears, making Spain the country with the most towns featured in this prestigious ranking.
Villajoyosa: The Number One Hidden Gem in Europe in 2024
“This town in Alicante is exactly what we would like it to be,” said the Spanish edition of Condé Nast Traveler in 2018. Villajoyosa’s name, translating to “happy town,” is indeed fitting.
Located in the heart of the Costa Blanca, this charming seaside town offers a stunning combination of colorful facades and golden sands. The vibrant palette of the buildings allows fishermen to quickly locate their homes after long days at sea.

Villajoyosa boasts over a dozen beautiful beaches and coves, including:
- Playa Centro (the longest)
- Playa del Torres
- Playa de la Caleta (two of the most popular)
- Paradís (popular for casual open-air bars)
- Bol Nou (surrounded by cliffs)
- Puntes del Moro and El Xarco (ideal for snorkelling)

Culinary Delights
Additionally, Spain’s gastronomic offerings greatly contribute to Villajoyosa’s allure.
