Lucy Edwards’ Favourite Guide Dog-Friendly Restaurants in London
18 May 2023
London’s streets are filled with numerous restaurants where you can indulge in a wonderful meal; however, not all accommodate guide dogs and their handlers. Despite anti-discrimination laws, the charity Guide Dogs UK reports that 81% of guide dog owners have encountered refusals at various businesses. This indicates a lack of awareness among some restaurant staff and owners regarding the proper treatment of assistance dogs.
While it’s important for the hospitality industry to align with the law, my aim is to guide you toward the most welcoming and accommodating dining spots that I have personally enjoyed with my guide dog. Below, you will find a curated list of excellent restaurants for your next lunch meeting or special celebration that prioritize both inclusiveness and delightful dining experiences.
What Makes a Restaurant Guide Dog-Friendly?
Having relied on guide dogs for nearly a decade, I understand the various factors that define a truly guide dog-friendly establishment. Although individual experiences may vary, here are some essential criteria that contribute to a positive experience for both you and your furry partner.
- Physical Layout: It is crucial to assess whether there is sufficient space between tables and furniture for you and your guide dog to navigate comfortably. If space is limited, ensure staff can assist you safely to a suitable table.
- Noise Level: Consider the music volume in the restaurant. Opt for a quieter area and don’t hesitate to request staff to lower the volume so you can better communicate with your guide dog and companions.
- Quality of Service: Exceptional service includes providing a water bowl for your guide dog when delivering drinks. Signage indicating “No dogs allowed other than assistance dogs” is also commendable, reducing disturbances for all diners.
