For as long as I can remember, Eastbourne has jokingly been referred to as God’s waiting room. Growing up along the coast in Worthing – another town with elderly connotations – this was the only thing I really knew about Eastbourne, nestled against the dramatic white-chalk cliffs of Beachy Head. My parents lived here for a spell in the late 1970s, which debunked the myth of it being solely home to older residents. They owned a small café, selling treats like fudge and rock to tourists while serving hearty meals to local workers. Grainy photographs show them living vibrantly during that era.
Eastbourne transformed itself in the 19th century under the vision of William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire. He redesigned it from a cluster of hamlets into an elegant retreat, enhancing it with wide, tree-lined roads, an extended seafront, and a railway line to London. Today, the town maintains its genteel charm with manicured gardens, an annual tennis tournament, and a picturesque pier—most recently reborn with controversial gold domes after a fire.
