01. Allow Plenty of Time for Your Visit
If you want to enjoy both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, allow 5-6 hours for your visit. For the Ellis Island Immigration Museum alone, it will take about 3-4 hours if you attend a tour.
02. Arrive Early to Avoid Lines
Lines for the ferry to Liberty Island and Ellis Island are often longest on weekends in the summer. However, the wait can exceed an hour even during the weekdays. If possible, plan to visit during the week and catch the first ferry to minimize wait times. Be prepared for security checks, which can also add to your waiting time.
03. Pack a Picnic
There is ample space for enjoying a picnic lunch on Ellis Island. You can avoid long lines at the concession stand and enjoy delicious snacks from one of New York City’s gourmet grocery stores.
04. Check out “Island of Hope, Island of Tears”
Take a break and gain a valuable introduction to your Ellis Island experience by watching a free movie screening. This film, narrated by Gene Hackman, tells the stories of immigrants who passed through Ellis Island, featuring historical video footage and photographs from its rich history. A Park Ranger will introduce the session and answer any questions you may have.
05. Prepare for the Weather
Bringing sunblock and water is essential if the weather looks warm. Interestingly, even on sunny days, the wind on the boat can be brisk. Therefore, it’s advisable to carry a sweater or jacket for comfort.
06. Know Where to Go
Facilities include full-service restrooms available on both Ellis Island, Liberty Island, and the Circle Line Ferry.
07. Free Tours With No Reservations Required
Take advantage of free ranger-led tours that offer insights into the Ellis Island experience. These informative 30-minute tours commence from the information booth inside the main building, led by knowledgeable Park Rangers.
08. Ellis Island Immigration for Beginners
With so many exhibits and performances at Ellis Island, one visit may not be enough. For first-time visitors, it’s recommended to start with the ranger-led tour, see “Island of Hope, Island of Tears,” and choose one or two additional exhibits to explore.
09. Visit the Third Floor
A visit to the dormitory gives insight into the lives of those waiting at Ellis Island. Additionally, photographers will appreciate the “Silent Voices” exhibit, showcasing photos from the mid-20th century during the island’s abandonment. Also, “Treasures from Home” displays items that immigrants brought with them, donated by the immigrants or their descendants.
10. Make Ellis Island Interesting for Kids
School-age children will find the interactive play entertaining. Moreover, many exhibits include audio components that are engaging and educational. The free Board of Inquiry hearings held multiple times a day allow kids to participate in reenacting an actual hearing. The Junior Ranger program on Ellis Island also offers great experiences for young visitors.
