Empowering Women on International Women’s Day: Advocating for Human Rights in Ukraine

Celebrating International Women’s Day: A Call to Action

Celebrations commemorating the political, historical, economic, and cultural achievements of women will take place around the world today in honor of International Women’s Day. iBestTravel challenges you to join in supporting this important cause.

History of International Women’s Day

The observation of March 8 to celebrate the historical, social, and political contributions of women dates back to the 1900s. However, more than 100 years later, there is still more progress to be made towards gender equality.

The 2022 Campaign Theme: “Break the Bias”

The campaign theme for 2022, as selected by the coordinating International Women’s Day organization, is “Break the Bias.” Through this theme, IWD aims to spotlight areas where we could still work towards greater equality and appreciation of differences among all individuals.

Emergency Support for Women in Crisis

One organization actively working toward these goals is the Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights. Founded in 1997, this feminist fund emerged from a need to provide emergency grants with minimal bureaucratic red tape, thus enabling groups to respond immediately to human rights situations. The organization claims it intervenes quickly when activists are poised to make significant gains or face grave threats to their lives and work.

Response to the Crisis in Ukraine

The Urgent Action Fund has established an emergency response for the situation unfolding in Ukraine. The organization is committed to supporting women, trans, and nonbinary activists by providing flexible funding and security support. Their typical turnaround time to respond to requests is 72 hours, ensuring that funds are in the hands of those on the ground within 1-7 days.
