Essential Tips for Successful International Travel Preparation

Going on an international trip soon? The rules for international flights come with many dos and don’ts. Here are 12 tips from experienced globe trotters designed to make that long-haul flight easier.

01 of 12 – Pack Lightly

During one of my first international business trips as an adult, I drastically overpacked. Consequently, I had to carry a large heavy suitcase, a big purse, and a garment bag around Paris at Metro and train stations that lacked elevators or escalators. After that, I vowed to only pack what I could comfortably carry by myself.

On long flights, it is advisable to get up and walk to stretch your muscles in order to avoid blood clots. Therefore, sitting in an aisle seat makes this much easier, so choose one as soon as you finalize your ticket.

Apps can really save the day while traveling, especially when you’re abroad. These travel apps assist you in staying connected with your airline, translating languages, finding airport services, picking your seats, and handling numerous other essential tasks efficiently.

On a long flight, looking well-dressed is important, but comfort is also essential. Therefore, avoid wearing clothes that restrict your movement. I prefer to wear a wrinkle-proof jacket that can double as a blanket or pillow, complemented by a long pashmina for additional versatility. This can function as a wrap, a pillow, or even an accessory to enhance travel outfits. Comfortable slip-on shoes are also recommended, as they are convenient to remove at security checks and during the flight.

Most airlines require that you arrive at least two hours prior to your flight, particularly if you are departing from a major U.S. international gateway airport. This gives you ample time to check your bags, check in, navigate security, and reach your gate stress-free.

Many travelers are aware that U.S. Customs and Immigration lines can be overwhelming, especially during peak arrival times at major international airports. Therefore, savvy travelers carry the Global Entry card, which enables them to bypass the Immigration and Customs lines, and also offers benefits for domestic travel through the Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck program.

07 of 12 – Lounge Around

Given that you need to be at the airport well in advance, consider paying for access to an airline-branded or airport lounge. There are many lounges that allow you to pay a cover charge for entry, providing a quiet space away from the bustling crowds before you board your flight.

08 of 12 – Drink Water

While it’s fine to enjoy a glass of wine or two during your flight, staying hydrated is crucial due to the dry air in aircraft cabins. Rather than continually asking flight attendants for small cups of water, consider purchasing a reusable water bottle and asking them to fill it.

Nothing can be more frustrating than being on a plane with a loud child or a chatty seatmate. Therefore, I never travel without a good pair of noise-canceling headphones or my Beats Flex By Dr. Dre earbuds. With these, I can enjoy some much-needed peace and quiet.

When it’s time to rest, comfort is key. Hence, I recommend investing in an inflatable neck pillow, an eye mask, and cozy socks to assist with sleep on your journey.

While an increasing number of airlines are installing power ports on their aircraft, you cannot always rely on this feature being available. Consequently, I always carry my trusted Mophie Juice Pack Powerstation Duo to ensure I can charge my devices whenever necessary.

12 of 12 – Show The Love

Flight attendants are dedicated to ensuring your safety and comfort. As a token of appreciation, consider giving them a box of sealed chocolates, such as Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares or Ferrero Rocher truffles. Although it may be unexpected, they might reciprocate the kindness in various ways.
