Essential Local’s Guide to Exploring Australia

Model Nathan McGuire on His Love of Western Australia and the Rise of Indigenous Fashion

3 September 2021

A high-profile model of Whadjuk Noongar descent, Nathan McGuire has appeared in some of Australia’s biggest campaigns. As an ambassador for First Nations Fashion and Design, and recently named a Changemaker during Australian Fashion Week, he is vocal about Indigenous representation, shaping a fresh, inclusive, and diverse creative landscape.

Current Trends in Australian Fashion

It’s a thrilling time for Australian fashion as designers explore new ideas. There is a noticeable shift, with an increasing number of creatives looking inward towards the diverse landscapes and niche cultures of Australia. Consequently, the fashion scene is becoming more experimental and varied.

Transformation of the Indigenous Fashion Sector

The Indigenous fashion sector has seen exponential growth over the past five years. Within the First Nations community, we recognize that Indigenous fashion has roots spanning more than 60,000 years. While the aesthetic has modernized and commercialized, access to Indigenous fashion is significantly broader now. As a result, there are numerous designers and brands emerging, each bringing unique narratives and perspectives from various cultural nations.

Favorites in Australian Design

Among the designers I admire is MAARA Collective, founded by Julie Shaw. This resort and swimwear brand was a National Indigenous Fashion Awards winner in 2020, reflecting a captivating aesthetic that resonates with cultural relevance. Similarly, Denni Francisco of Ngali offers a diverse range of designs that celebrate and feature the artwork of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Favorite Places in Australia

My favorite escape is returning home to Perth, where my family and the Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar are rooted. It’s a space that rejuvenates my spirit, especially with its stunning beaches. Scarborough and Trigg are particularly special; they offer a vibrant metropolitan atmosphere where I can enjoy a coffee before heading to the shore. Places like Yagan Square serve as cultural hubs with impressive outdoor sculptures and festivals, which connect the community.

Additional Places Worth Visiting

Byron Bay is another area where I frequently find solace. This region provides a spiritual experience and possesses an energy deeply respectful of its traditional owners, the Bundjalung Arakwal people. Additionally, I cherish visits to Broome, where the stunning contrast of turquoise waters, white sands, and red cliffs creates a breathtaking landscape unique in its intensity.
