Essential Spa Etiquette: A Guide to Undressing and Tipping

Everything you need to know about massage etiquette and spa etiquette.

Going to the spa for the first time can be a daunting experience. It’s supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable; however, entering that change room on your own in preparation for your first massage can be stressful and confusing. Let’s ease those worries with essential spa etiquette tips.

Spa Etiquette Tips

Throughout our 18 years of traveling, Dave and I have enjoyed diverse spa experiences, from luxurious retreats to quirky offerings. We have learned what to expect when entering every type of spa, and consequently, we have discovered that spa etiquette is remarkably consistent across continents and price ranges.

So here’s everything you need to know about spa etiquette to ease the stress.

1. Arrive Early

Moreover, it’s essential to arrive at least 15 minutes early for your appointment—30 to 45 minutes is ideal. This extra time not only allows you to fill out necessary forms but also grants you the opportunity to enjoy everything the spa has to offer. Many facilities feature luxurious sitting areas where you can sip tea or enjoy fruit-infused water while listening to calming music. There may also be saunas, soak pools, and steam baths available for your use before or after your massage.

Arriving early can help you achieve that Zen state to truly enjoy your massage; thus, you will not feel rushed or stressed as your appointment approaches.

2. Ask Questions

Upon completing your paperwork, a staff member will guide you to the change area and show you which locker is yours to secure your valuables. They will indicate where the treatment rooms are located, as well as the amenities like the sauna or steam room. If you are unsure about anything, it’s vital to ask; after all, this is your time to be comfortable and relaxed.

I recall struggling with an electronic locker in the past. Instead of stressing, I simply returned to the front desk and sought assistance. It’s important to ask where to go next and what to expect following your treatment.

3. Go Nude

There’s nothing under that robe!

Many people often wonder about the appropriate clothing to wear at the spa. Should you bring a bathing suit? Should you receive a massage in your underwear? The straightforward answer is: go nude. When taken to the changing rooms, you will receive a robe and slippers.

If you feel self-conscious, opt for a private changing room (most upscale spas provide such facilities) or a bathroom stall to change. After donning your robe, you will proceed to the waiting area before your therapist takes you to your treatment room. They will give you a moment to get comfortable and settle beneath the covers before your massage begins.

Rest assured; during your treatment, you will remain covered with blankets and towels, with therapists ensuring your comfort throughout the entire session.

Note: This may differ in many places in Asia, Turkey, or Morocco, where being nude may be standard; therefore, be prepared for such cultural differences.

4. Quiet Time

During one of Dave’s recent massages, he experienced a talkative therapist. Afterward, he expressed discomfort about the constant conversation. It’s important to remember that it’s your massage; you can dictate your needs. If you’d rather not engage in conversation, simply communicate that you wish to relax and enjoy your treatment in silence. Most therapists will appreciate your honesty.

5. What to Do When the Massage is Over

After your massage, your therapist will allow you to relax for a few minutes. Take your time to get up—this moment of peace is essential. However, be mindful not to linger too long as there may be clients waiting for their sessions. Enjoy the tranquility, breathe deeply, and stretch out those limbs.

Your therapist will typically be waiting outside with a glass of water before guiding you to the relaxation area.

6. Tipping

One common concern is whether to tip the therapist. Rest assured, there’s no need to present a cash tip immediately after the massage. Relax and enjoy your experience. If you choose to leave a tip, you can simply add it to the bill as you exit.

Additionally, some spas include gratuities in their service charges; thus, it’s prudent to inquire if this is the case. Asking, “Is the tip included in the price?”, is completely acceptable. If not included, a tip of 15% to 20% is typical.

Remember, while tipping is not mandatory, it is certainly appreciated by the staff.

7. Use the Facilities

Before or after your treatment, take advantage of the amenities offered at the spa. In addition to complimentary teas and water, many spas provide healthy snacks like fruits and nuts. Should the facility feature a steam room or sauna, feel free to utilize them either before or after your massage. Many people prefer to enjoy these services following their treatment to relax sore muscles, but both options are available for you.

Moreover, many spas offer showers and hair dryers, making it easy to freshed up before or after your experience.

8. Steam Room Etiquette

In most spas, steam rooms and saunas are accessible to both men and women. When using these facilities, it is common to go nude; however, if you prefer, you may cover yourself with a towel to sit on for hygiene reasons. If you feel uncomfortable being nude, wearing a bathing suit is acceptable, though keep in mind that most individuals may choose to go without one.

It’s important to maintain a clean and respectful environment; thus, activities like nail clipping or foot exfoliation are inappropriate.

9. Whirlpool Etiquette

If the spa includes a swimming pool or whirlpool, it is advisable to wear a bathing suit. Swimwear is generally acceptable in these settings, even if gender-separated areas are available.

10. Cell Phones

Prior to your visit, make sure to leave your cell phone in your locker. While many individuals wish to document their spa day on social media, the spa serves as a tranquil sanctuary where silence and privacy reign supreme.

Note: We have been permitted to take photographs when working at spas, ensuring nobody else was around to infringe upon privacy.

11. Respect the Quiet

When at the spa, maintain a respectful atmosphere by keeping conversations at a whisper. Whether you are in the steam room or sauna, refrain from engaging strangers in small talk. Many individuals prefer to meditate and relax without the pressure of conversation.

Different Types of Spas

Fish Spa is probably one of the weirdest and wackiest spa treatments of them all!

Our travels have led us to experience a variety of spa treatments worldwide, including Hammams in Morocco and Turkey and reflexology in Penang, Malaysia. Each spa has its unique ambiance and treatment styles.

Spas Around the World

It’s important to note that not all spas deliver the same experience. In Scandinavia and Switzerland, nudity is often the norm, and you may find yourself in close quarters with others. Conversely, spas in Turkey and Morocco may involve massages in public settings without much privacy. Always feel free to ask questions, and if something doesn’t align with your comfort level, don’t hesitate to voice your concerns. This moment is yours to enjoy!

Now that you possess the knowledge of spa etiquette and what to expect during your visit, allow yourself a day of pampering and time to relax. Your spa experience awaits!
