Essential Tips for Visiting the Roman Colosseum

Colosseum Overview

One of Italy’s most popular attractions and a recognizable symbol of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum should be prioritized on the itinerary for every first-time visitor to Rome. Also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, this ancient arena was the site of countless gladiatorial battles and bloody wild animal fights. Visitors can sit in the stands and observe the amphitheater’s intricate underground passageways and trap doors – remnants of its storied entertainment history.

However, because the Colosseum is a top attraction in Rome, obtaining tickets can be challenging. To avoid standing in long lines during your visit, consider purchasing a Colosseum and Roman Forum pass online from Select Italy or acquiring a Roma Pass or Archeologica Card, which allows entry to the Colosseum and other significant sights for a flat rate. Important Security Information

As of April 2016, security measures at the Colosseum have been heightened. All visitors, including ticket holders with “skip the line” access and guided tour participants, must pass through a security check, including a metal detector. Consequently, the security line can be quite lengthy, with wait times exceeding one hour; therefore, plan accordingly. Additionally, backpacks, large purses, and luggage are restricted from being brought inside the Colosseum.
