The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly transformed the travel landscape, giving rise to new types of trips that prioritize safety while maintaining a sense of adventure. One such innovative travel option is provided by the newly-founded and Black-owned company, We Out Here.
Founded by husband-and-wife duo Ron Griswell and Linea Johnson in Elizabeth City, , We Out Here provides curated local experiences aimed at helping guests to “heal and recharge in a safe and healthy environment.” Their mission is especially relevant given the socioeconomic challenges faced by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) communities during these tumultuous times. Additionally, We Out Here is committed to giving back to the local BIPOC community by hiring Black vendors and partnering with Black-owned bed and breakfasts.
Initially, We Out Here arose from a trip organized for friends aimed at alleviating stress during the challenging early months of the pandemic. As Linea explains, all activities were surprises carefully planned to align with CDC and WHO guidelines to prioritize health and safety. “After the trip, one of the friends suggested that Ron and I create that same experience for others,” Linea remarked. This inspired the establishment of We Out Here in early July 2020.
Guests booking their three-night, four-day trips with We Out Here will experience an “inclusive and luxurious adventure” filled with surprise activities where all details are meticulously arranged for their safety and comfort. Ron and Linea stress that they prioritize health precautions, such as catering to small groups and providing masks, hand sanitizer, and daily temperature checks, thereby ensuring a safe environment for everyone involved.
Launching a travel-related business amid a global pandemic presented significant challenges. “We received pushback from the social media community where people questioned how we could promote travel during such times,” Ron and Linea explained. They acknowledge that remaining at home is indeed the safest option; however, they are committed to encouraging responsible travel practices. “At We Out Here, we prioritize safety while offering unique experiences,” they stated.
We Out Here particularly emphasizes creating a healthy environment for BIPOC individuals, addressing a significant gap in the travel industry. “The industry must do more to create safe spaces for BIPOCs,” they remarked. Their journey has transformed from a simple trip to friends into an impactful business, with a focus on wellness and restoration through travel and community. “Our primary goal is to heal each other and provide a safe space for that process. Although starting this travel business during a pandemic is daunting, it has also proven to be immensely rewarding,” Ron and Linea concluded.
