Horse Island: A Private Island Gem in Ireland
A private island in has recently sold for over £5m ($6.4m) to a European buyer who only viewed a video of the property before making the purchase. This was largely due to the travel restrictions caused by the pandemic. Known as Horse Island, this 157-acre island is situated off the coast of Schull in .
Historical Significance and Natural Beauty
Horse Island boasts a rich history; it was once the site of a thriving copper industry between 1820 and 1874. The population peaked at 137 inhabitants in 1841, most of whom worked in the mines. However, by 1965, all residents had departed, leaving behind ruins of the old village and managers’ houses.
The island features a rugged landscape, including three sandy beaches populated by seals, fertile farming pastures, and diverse wildlife. The expansive 4,500 sq ft main house includes six bedrooms along with two three-bedroom, two two-bedroom, and two one-bedroom guest cottages. All accommodations offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Roaring Water Bay, providing opportunities for swimming and scuba diving among dolphins.
Exceptional Amenities
This private island offers a variety of exceptional amenities, including:
- A private pier for mooring ferries and private boats
- A helipad for convenient access
- A games and gym house for leisure activities
- A tennis court for sports lovers
- A shipwreck playhouse for children
Moreover, Horse Island is entirely self-sufficient, with its own electricity, water, and sewage systems, alongside private roads providing access throughout the island. The purchase of this unique property was the result of months of negotiation during the coronavirus lockdown, facilitated by Mayfair-based real estate broker Montague Real Estate, alongside Knight Frank’s Private Office, Engel & Völkers, and Colliers International.
Due to global restrictions on meetings and travel, the negotiations for this remarkable property were conducted primarily through WhatsApp with the client, who does not speak English.
As lockdowns ease globally, travelers are adjusting to a new normal.
