Discover Abu Dhabi: A Local’s Guide

iBestTravel Local Lindsey Parry has lived in Abu Dhabi for over five years, immersing herself in its welcoming community and rich historical charm. While it may take time to fully appreciate Abu Dhabi, this local has grown to cherish the city.

Beach Fun: I have one child who can’t get enough of the beach. Abu Dhabi is home to fabulous beaches, with Saadiyat Beach being the best. Featuring long stretches of white sand and clear blue sea, it feels like a vacation paradise. Our typical weekend includes an early morning paddle in the water followed by coffee and a bite to eat at Tashas Cafe in Al Bateen Marina.

For Affordable Eats: Middle Eastern cuisine is unbeatable. Authentic Lebanese or Emirati food, like that at Lebanon Mill or Najd Palace, offers a true regional experience, despite their unassuming exteriors.

Must-See for Visitors: When friends visit, I always take them to Qasr Al Hosn. This historic site is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi and features an engaging exhibition detailing the emirate’s story, showcasing the dramatic changes in city life over the years. The Mina Port is not to be missed, featuring a vibrant fish market and traditional dhows docked in the harbor, depicting the age-old lifestyle of the region.

The Ideal Date Spot: Restaurants with a sea view are the best choice. At BBQ Al Qasr in the Emirates Palace, romantic dining awaits right on the sand. Alternatively, the Beach House Rooftop at the Park Hyatt hotel offers stunning views and a serene atmosphere ideal for enjoying sunsets.

Escaping the City: When seeking an escape from Abu Dhabi, I visit Al Ain. This Garden City, known for its greenery and lush oases, offers a glimpse into the past. It’s quieter and more traditional than both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, showcasing various historical and heritage sites. Highlights include Qasr Al Muwaiji, Al Jahili Fort, Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum, and the traditional camel souq.

For Special Celebrations: I celebrated my birthday at Galleria Mall. It’s the premier shopping destination in Abu Dhabi for exceptional finds and offers a fascinating environment for people-watching and observing the lifestyles of wealthy locals. The mall is also home to many outstanding restaurants, with my favorite being Zuma, known for its exquisite black cod.

Why I Love Abu Dhabi: I know I’m an Abu Dhabian because I cherish the laid-back lifestyle here. In contrast to Dubai, Abu Dhabi is quieter and fosters a strong community spirit, making it perfect for families. Moreover, it emphasizes a healthy work-life balance, offering residents the best of both worlds.
