Experience the Ghibli Museum in Japan Through Virtual Videos
The famous Ghibli Museum in Japan is currently closed to the public due to health and safety reasons. However, museum staff have devised an innovative way for enthusiasts to catch a glimpse of the magical world of Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio.
Museum staff have been uploading a series of short videos on its YouTube channel, each of which explores little corners of the Mitaka Forest Ghibli Museum, named after the Tokyo suburb where the Museum was founded in 1999. As photography is generally prohibited inside the museum, these videos present an excellent opportunity to explore hidden corners and uncover details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The video collection varies in length, with some being a minute long or even just thirty seconds, but each is sufficient to capture the unique spaces within the Museum. One video highlights the impressive fresco that adorns the Space of Wonder room, showcasing beloved Ghibli characters such as Kiki the witch and her cat Jiji, along with the sisters Satsuki and Mei Kusakabe from My Neighbor Totoro.
Furthermore, one video invites viewers to discover the Straw Hat Café, whose mascot is Marco Pagot, also known as Porco Rosso. The decor of the café is adorned with whimsical objects, and the menu features dishes that prominently display Ghibli characters, particularly the recognizable Soot Sprites. Throughout the Museum, visitors can admire a variety of stunning stained glass windows highlighting characters and settings from the extensive collection of Studio Ghibli films.
The Ghibli Museum was originally slated to reopen on April 28; however, it has communicated to visitors via official notice that the reopening has been postponed indefinitely. Of course, tickets will be refunded, and further information can be found on the official website here.
