Peninsula, located about a 45-minute drive south of downtown Cleveland, is one of our favorite Northeast Ohio communities. The village is situated at the center of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where residents and visitors alike enjoy the scenic town with its charming historic district.

While exploring the park, take the time to wander along the main street, where buildings dating back to the 1800s create a quaint atmosphere. Art galleries, specialty shops, and inviting restaurants offer a relaxing experience throughout the year.

01. History

The name “Peninsula” originates from how the Cuyahoga River wraps around a piece of land resembling a peninsula. In 1827, Peninsula became known as the “Seaport Town” of the Western Reserve. It connected the Western Reserve with eastern trade when the Ohio and Erie Canal opened, showcasing a style reminiscent of eastern seaports, complete with bars and hotels.

Stone quarrying served as the main industry in the area throughout the 19th century, while boat building became another source of pride for the village. Today, Peninsula cherishes its history, featuring numerous buildings from the 1800s in the downtown historic district, many of which remain remarkably well-preserved.

02. Demographics

As per the 2010 census, the City of Peninsula has a population of 565 residents, predominantly white at 98.4%, with .4% African-American and .4% Asian. Additionally, 55% of Peninsula residents are married, and the median age is 47.

Annual events in Peninsula include the Spring Stroll, Peddler Day, and Christmas festivities. The most popular local highlight is the Boston Mills Art Fest, celebrated over two weekends in early July.
