Louvre Pyramid

Nearly as dazzling as the cherished collection in the Louvre, the Grand Pyramide stands at 21 meters high, crafted from glass, and serves as the main entrance to the museum. Shimmering sunlight penetrates the 673 glass panes, guiding visitors through an effective subterranean network that leads into the museum’s main buildings.

Commissioned amidst significant controversy, including concerns about Pei’s nationality and the modernist design’s departure from the French Renaissance style, the pyramid continues to spark debate while standing as an iconic piece of Pei’s architectural portfolio.

Sūzhōu Museum

This museum features a captivating collection of ancient Chinese art and is one of Pei’s most recent designs located in his hometown of Sūzhōu, China. Drawing inspiration from traditional Sūzhōu gardens and their harmony with water and bamboo, Pei designed a building that honors the past while paving a new path for the future.

When visiting, it is advisable not to wear flip flops, as the surrounding atmosphere enhances the experience. The museum is adjacent to the Humble Administrator’s Garden, renowned as Sūzhōu’s largest and most impressive garden, typically crowded. Therefore, it is wise to visit early in the morning before heading to the museum.

Miho Museum

Located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, the Miho Museum is a unique assembly, accessed via a footpath and a tunnel drilled through a mountain, opening onto a breathtaking gorge. This structure, which Pei affectionately termed Shangri-La, seamlessly integrates with its natural landscape, reflecting the beauty and serenity of the environment while paying homage to the ornate temples of nearby Kyoto.

The original collection predominantly featured rare Japanese tea ceremony utensils, but Pei inspired collector Mihoko Koyama to expand her assortment. Throughout the construction process, adjustments to the design were made to accommodate new pieces of art, emphasizing Pei’s commitment to creating a harmonious space.

Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, houses the largest collection of Islamic art globally. Pei’s masterful design sees the museum rise from a purpose-built island, set within extensive landscaped grounds of lawns and ornamental trees. The building elegantly captures light and space, with a dome that offers a modern reinterpretation of elements prevalent in Islamic architecture.

As you explore the vast collection, take your time to enjoy the splendid views of the water, the café located downstairs, or the exquisite IDAM restaurant on the top floor, known as one of Doha’s finest dining experiences.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum

Inspired by generations of music that electrifies, Pei initially declined the invitation to design the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as he favored jazz over rock. However, after reevaluating, he embarked on a week-long trip with Jann Wenner, then-publisher of Rolling Stone, visiting Memphis and New Orleans to explore the connections between Rock and Jazz. The result was remarkable.

Pei’s design celebrates the youthful energy and rebellion epitomized by rock music. With wings bursting forth from the pyramid, the cantilevered theater hangs over Lake Erie, making this an extraordinary destination to discover your favorite musical icons.
