Explore the stunning new luxury train, 36+3, unveiled in Japan, designed for an unforgettable sightseeing journey across Kyushu. This train is synonymous with breathtaking landscapes, rejuvenating hot springs, invigorating hikes, majestic mountains, and serene coastal retreats. The southern island is a hidden gem favored by nature enthusiasts.

Operated by JR Kyushu, the train’s name, 36+3, signifies Kyushu’s standing as the 36th largest island in the world. The number 39 (36+3) sounds similar to “thank you” in Japanese, reflecting the company’s appreciation for its passengers. Additionally, the “3” symbolizes the emotions passengers are encouraged to feel: inspiration, wonder, and happiness. With its sleek black exterior and gold accents, the train embodies elegance.

The 36+3 features six first-class cars, where advanced online reservations are essential. The train operates on five distinct routes that showcase Kyushu’s most remarkable highlights, including journeys from Miyazaki to Oita and Beppu, celebrated for its world-renowned hot springs. The train also travels from Fukuoka to the historic city of Nagasaki. Notably, the first two cars can be reserved for private lunches and dinners, while the third car offers an array of drinks and snacks. Additionally, there is a lounge car, a shared space perfect for events within the train. Meals onboard feature Kyushu’s specialties, specially curated to highlight the island’s culinary treasures.

The train’s interior is a harmonious blend of modern luxury and traditional Japanese design principles, providing passengers with an opulent experience.

According to Esma E. Onay from the Kyushu Tourism Promotion Organization, “The 36+3 luxury sightseeing train combines traditional Japanese styles with modern luxury, and it is built using materials sourced locally from Kyushu, highlighting its sustainable design.”
