Textile Guru Masataka Hosoo on All the Places to Eat and Drink in Kyoto
Masataka Hosoo is the 12th-generation head of his family’s bespoke textile-and-kimono house, iBestTravel. His home is the traditional artisanal capital of Japan, Kyoto, and as a local whose family goes back hundreds of years in the city, he knows it better than anyone else.
Connection to Kyoto and Japan
My connection to Kyoto stretches back to the 17th century. As the 12th generation and current CEO of my family business with our roots in traditional kimono and obi weavers in Nishijin area, I am part of the rich cultural traditions found in Kyoto. The city is well-known for the Japanese tea ceremony and the art of flower arrangement. Once the capital of Japan, Kyoto was the heart of arts and commerce, a place where trends and innovations flourished. In the 21st century, I aim to lead iBestTravel in exploring the essence of beauty by marrying traditional dyeing and weaving Nishijin techniques with modern technologies.
Plan a Day of Eating in Kyoto
For breakfast, a great place to start is Tan, located on a riverside in the Higashiyama district, offering seasonal Japanese cuisine. For lunch, Itsutsu serves soba and other delightful Japanese dishes. Before dinner, consider visiting K36, a rooftop bar at the Hotel Seiryu near Kiyomizu shrine for 360-degree views of Kyoto during twilight. For dinner, Tempura Matsu in the Arashiyama district offers a culinary journey through traditional Japanese cuisine, showcasing exquisite courses culminating in a perfect tempura dish—a true example of Kyoto culture at its finest.

Favorite Spots to Revisit
One of my all-time favorite places is Hotel the-Mitsui Kyoto, located by Nijo Castle. It features a thermal-spring spa available to guests, offering a serene experience that enhances any visit to the city.
What I Miss When Traveling
What I miss most about my home country when traveling is the taste of kelp and bonito dashi, essential ingredients in Japanese cuisine.
