Originally constructed in 1919, Oklahoma City’s Lake Overholser is the metro’s oldest reservoir, built as a water supply to a still-operating water treatment plant at NW 6th and Pennsylvania Avenue. Lake Overholser is located on the northwest side of the city and is connected to Lake Hefner.
Although it may not be as prominent a recreational destination as Lake Hefner, Oklahoma City’s Lake Overholser, named after the city’s 16th Mayor, offers numerous amenities such as boat ramps, a covered fishing pier, and picnic areas.
Key Statistics
Lake Overholser spans approximately 1,600 acres and has an average depth of 6 feet, reaching a maximum depth of 13 feet. This depth is significantly shallower compared to nearby Lake Hefner, which features a depth of 94 feet at its deepest point.
Location and Access
The lake is situated to the southwest of Lake Hefner, just south of Route 66, and north of I-40, nestled between Council and Morgan Roads. The dam can be found on the southeast corner, with entry points available at NW 10th and NW 39th Expressway.
Boating Opportunities
Boat ramps are conveniently located on the east, south, and southwest sides of Lake Overholser. Activities permitted include sailing, motor boating, and jet skiing. For more information regarding permits, it is advisable to contact a Parks and Recreation representative. Fishing Amenities
Fishing remains one of the primary attractions at Lake Overholser, featuring a covered fishing pier located on the southwest side of the lake. The same locations for obtaining boating permits also apply for fishing permit purchases.
Recreational Facilities
For those seeking picnic options, the southeast side of Lake Overholser features multiple picnic areas including a covered picnic pavilion available with prior notice. Moreover, the lake area includes soccer fields, walking and hiking trails, and tennis courts. Please note that swimming is not allowed at Lake Overholser.
