Explore Portofino: Tiffany Hsu’s Ultimate Travel Guide

When did you first visit Portofino?

I first visited Portofino three years ago on a romantic long weekend getaway with my husband. My first impression was that it was like stepping into a picturesque storybook. The area exudes opulence and, at the same time, a down-to-earth charm. It’s a stereotypical Italian setting, with its beautiful and well-presented surroundings. What stood out to me on that first trip was the authentic side of Portofino, where walking through the streets, I encountered typical Italian families who call this spot home and heard the enchanting traditional Italian music following me down the cobbled lanes.

Where do you stay?

My favourite hotel is located in Santa Margherita, close to Portofino. I love the friendly staff and the hotel’s breathtaking view overlooking the bay of San Michele. It’s visually stunning with its grand Rococo architecture, and everything is presented with meticulous attention to detail. I also suggest enjoying a drink at Belmond Hotel Splendido, which offers a truly luxurious experience.

The best places to eat?

There are a few standout restaurants in Portofino I highly recommend: Langosteria Paraggi is a fantastic choice, known for its delightful atmosphere and exquisite seafood dishes with a twist. After dinner, I love strolling to Gelateria Gepi, an inspiring little cafe and ice cream parlour, to indulge in some homemade gelato. For a more traditional dining experience, Delfino is a favourite of mine, where you can’t go wrong with trying the trofie al pesto paired with freshly baked focaccia for an authentic meal.

The best spot for a pitstop?

One of my go-to places is Antica Drogheria Seghezzo, a charming little patisserie in Santa Margherita Ligure, where I indulge in their fabulous macarons. Another favourite spot is Bar Mariuccia, a quaint café by the port that’s perfect for grabbing a coffee and enjoying the atmosphere while watching the world go by.

Where would you head in the evening?

For a delightful aperitivo experience, Ristorante Puny is a must-visit. Its beautiful outdoor seating facing the port offers a perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail and watch the sunset. The ambience is incredibly romantic, with a lively buzz as people return from their boat trips.

Where do you go for some culture?

Portofino offers a wealth of architectural and artistic wonders. The buildings resemble masterpieces adorned with stunning frescoes. In particular, I highly recommend visiting the bay of San Fruttuoso, where a Benedictine abbey was built in the eighth century. Another must-visit cultural gem is Castello Brown, which captivates with its charm and provides panoramic views of the area.

Any favourite outdoor spots?

When visiting Portofino, you can’t beat a day on the ocean. I enjoy starting my day with a refreshing swim in the clear blue water. When it comes to beaches, Paraggi Beach is one of my favorites for its serene charm. However, when I’m seeking a livelier vibe, I head to Santa Margherita Ligure, which is conveniently close and lined with umbrellas and a vibrant atmosphere.

Do you take any day trips?

During my last visit, my husband and I had the opportunity to embark on a day trip to Cinque Terre, known for its breathtaking scenic views and rugged coastline. Moreover, I enjoyed trying the most exquisite pesto I have ever tasted, adding a delightful culinary experience to the trip. While in Portofino, I always make it a point to go on a boat trip, as it is the best way to uncover hidden coves and beaches that are inaccessible from land.

Where do you go shopping?

I prefer exploring open-air markets and immersing myself in the local culinary delights rather than shopping for clothes. One of the best spots is the open-air markets of Santa Margherita, where I pick up olive oils and sweet treats. Also, the street market in Camogli on Wednesdays is a must-visit for treasures like cheese and fresh produce.

Your favourite secret spot?

We discovered a hidden gem in Chiavari near Portofino. This captivating spot is the Palazzo Rocco Botanic Garden, where vibrant colors, fragrant blooms, and a tranquil atmosphere provide a perfect retreat to immerse in nature.

What do you pack?

For my trip to Portofino, I love packing items that capture the town’s beauty. Sunscreen is also a must-have for any sun-drenched holiday. My favourite brand is Dr Barbara Sturm for sun protection.

I enjoy a mix of elegant and comfortable outfits for evenings, ensuring I’m both stylish and ready to explore this stunning coastal town.
