Explore Santo Winery: A Must-Visit Destination in Santorini

Wine tasting in Santorini has seen remarkable growth in recent years, with Santo Winery showcasing this evolution beautifully. Offering a world-class view from high above the iconic caldera, a visit here makes for a worthwhile addition to your adventures on the island.

The location serves as a fantastic spot to view the sunset, giving a unique perspective on the caldera. However, if you plan to visit Santo in the late afternoon or evening, be aware that its elevation can lead to windy conditions. Consequently, you may want to bring a jacket even if the day has been warm.

The Wines

Like all wineries in Santorini, the bottles at Santo benefit from the distinct growing conditions on the island. The rich volcanic soil adds a unique flavor to the wines, and the unusual “basket” style of vine training provides additional protection from the strong winds. Santorini boasts several local varietals, including the widely favored assyrtiko grape, known for its pale hue and pronounced minerality. Additionally, the deep red “vin santo” wine, originally created for churches, offers a rich sweetness that pairs perfectly with desserts and is often featured in modern Santorini cuisine. Santo Winery showcases a diverse range of wines from various collective members, resulting in a broad selection.

Oenotourism Center

While at the winery, guests can enjoy a film detailing the Santo winemaking process at the Oenotourism Center, which operates from 10 am until sunset from April through November.

Events

Santo Winery boasts a large open terrace area, frequently hosting wine and food events, including the annual “Cities by the Sea” wine and gastronomy festival. The venue is also a popular choice for weddings and other special occasions.

Wine and Gourmet Food Shop

Furthermore, Santo Winery is eager to send visitors home with a selection of their exceptional wines. They offer unique combination packages featuring a choice bottle along with various Santorini specialties, such as indigenous yellow fava beans and the acclaimed anhydrous tomato paste, which is made from tomatoes watered solely by dew collected in the porous volcanic soil. Even if you are not fond of tomatoes, this paste is sure to win you over with its volcanic vegetable caviar-like quality.

Getting There

Santo Winery is conveniently located just south of Fira. By following the signs to Perissa, you will find the winery approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) from Fira, marked by flags that will catch your eye to the right. Parking is available for free. However, since the winery may occasionally close for special events, it is wise to call ahead to confirm availability.
