Enjoying Summer in Brussels: A Guide to Cool Spots

Brussels may not scream Speedos and sunscreen, but when the big ball in the sky is ablaze, the Belgian capital has plenty of refreshing places to cool off. From sun-drenched terraces and rooftop parties to pop-up al fresco food events, here’s how you can enjoy the sunshine in Brussels.

Swimming in the City

When the mercury begins to bubble and dreams of a crystal-blue swimming pool start appearing like a mirage, fear not: the hippest spot in Brussels right now is the Jam Hotel’s rooftop bar – which comes complete with its own pool. The bartenders are generous with the ice in their legendary gin and tonics, so soak up the sun in a deckchair or join one of their pop-up yoga sessions.

It’s Hip to Be Square

Sun seekers will fall in love with Saint-Géry Square, a crowd-pleaser with plenty of choices between sunny and shady spots. Keep cool with a fresh juice from the Zebra Bar or grab a beer at Le Roi des Belges. Don’t miss the Halles Saint-Géry – a stunning Flemish Neo-Renaissance style building that houses a café and hosts various exhibitions and concerts. After exploring inside, try a stoemp at Be my Stoemp and enjoy the impressive shadow of the hall.

Local’s Choice

If you start to overheat, try a chose (a house mocktail made with grapefruit juice and tonic water), an iced latte, or a local ‘Bruxellensis’ beer from Chez Franz. This café embodies Belgian charm, where locals mingle over long brunches, sophisticated jazz evenings, or an Italian aperitivo.

Café Belga boasts one of the capital’s largest terraces, overlooking the Place Eugène Flagey and shimmering Ixelles Ponds. Mixing tables and loungers, it buzzes when the sun is out. Weekends see a market serving everything from trinkets to fresh food, including delicious oysters, rotisserie chicken, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Don’t forget to visit the iconic Frit Flagey fritkot for a taste of traditional fries.

Terrace Treasures

Brussels is home to a trove of terraces and roof gardens, perfect for enjoying the warmer weather. Stop for a frothy homemade lemonade or a generous brunch portion on La Fabrique en Ville’s leafy terrace while people-watching in Le parc d’Égmont. This chic and high-end shopping district features a beautifully restored orangery, a peaceful haven that radiates elegance and tranquility. Expect scrumptious treats, including tartines, pastries, and homemade breads, all served in a casual, chic atmosphere.

Shady in the morning and sunny from lunch onwards, Café Walvis offers an impressive terrace overlooking the canal. Enjoy a relaxed lunch and order a pintje (a glass of pilsner) or juice while reading a sun-dappled newspaper in this minimalistic, wood-panelled establishment.

For stunning views, take the elevator to the wood-decked rooftop terrace of the Chelton Hotel and take in the cityscape. After spotting the Atomium, relax on one of the chic, minimalist loungers and enjoy the sunset over the bustling streets.

A Moveable Feast

Food enthusiasts can take advantage of the city’s rich green spaces and local produce suppliers with events like Sauvages. Held outdoors on Thursdays from May to October, this event, described as ‘wild dining’, offers local delicacies in an al fresco setting. Always hosted in a different location, the experience includes a buffet featuring Belgian and French cheese, homemade spreads, and a selection of natural wines. It’s advisable to secure your place in advance (approx. €27 all included), and don’t worry—if the weather turns, there’s always a backup plan in place.

Another exciting option is Apéros Urbains, blending music and sunshine for an outdoor party every Friday from May to September. Each week, the event takes place in a different outdoor space, so be sure to check their website for details. With plenty of food and drink stalls, and an onsite cocktail mixologist, attendees are welcome to bring their own provisions, although there’s no shortage of food and drink options thanks to local partnerships.

Located on the outskirts of Josaphat Parc, one of the city’s most beautifully luscious green spaces, the Live Central Park restobar offers an extensive selection of 100 beers. Recharge with a snack and enjoy the greenery and views from the outdoor terrace. Alternatively, stroll further into the park and head to Buvette Sint-Sebastiaan, known for serving some of Brussels’ best fries complemented by homemade mayo.
