Adventurous Hiking in Jordan’s Dead Sea Region
The stereotypical image of the Dead Sea often features sunbathers floating lazily amidst the calm waters. However, for thrill-seekers looking for adrenaline-pumping activities, the area inland is teeming with stunning waterfalls, wadis (valleys and canyons), and unique natural experiences that contrast sharply with the tranquil shores of the Dead Sea.
Lace up your hiking shoes, pack a nutritious lunch and plenty of water, and embark on the Dead Sea Highway. Once you leave the gorgeous blue waters behind, a world of adventure begins.
Wadi Weida’a Waterfall
Start your journey with a gentle climb alongside a serene stream, passing a local soaking tub before reaching the waterfall formed by fallen boulders. Palm trees and ferns embellish the trail, providing a beautiful nature experience. Walkers of all skill levels can delight in this 6km round-trip hike. The trailhead is located about 60.5km south of Sweimeh, just past an unmarked turnoff 6km up the highway towards Karak.
Wadi Zarqa Ma’in
Prepare for an exhilarating experience in the broad canyon of Wadi Zarqa Ma’in, where you’ll wade through the river along the way. As you navigate towering walls and splash in natural pools, the joyful laughter of families will enhance the lively atmosphere. This popular trailhead is recognizable by the cluster of cars parked near a small bridge, about 12km south of Sweimeh.
Wadi Himara
Venture into Wadi Himara, where sun-baked rocks create an almost surreal landscape. The ascent through this 4km-long valley invites exploration of small side canyons. End your hike at a refreshing waterfall, providing a perfect opportunity to cool off. A small parking area along the highway lies approximately 8.5km south of Sweimeh.
Wadi Numeira Siq
What starts as a simple walk through a wide wadi evolves into an astonishing hike as canyon walls close in, revealing breathtaking rock formations. After hiking about 9km, you’ll find yourself in a lush, expansive valley. This hike, ideal for athletic individuals, involves climbing over boulders and waterfalls. A dirt road leading to the trailhead can be found around 68km south of Sweimeh.
Wadi Mujib Siq
As you hike along a knee-deep river, spectacular rock walls change colors with the sun’s movement. This thrilling trek features rope bridges and swift crossings, leading you to a dramatic waterfall at the end. Although known for tourist activities, the Wadi Mujib Siq offers a unique experience, managed by Wild Jordan with limited daily entries. Expect stunning views from the nearby Wadi Mujib Chalets, perfect for unwinding after a day of excitement.
Getting There
Travelers can connect with JETT public buses from Amman to Sweimeh, located on the northeastern shore of the Dead Sea, where most hotels are situated. However, to reach the wadi trailheads, renting a car is advisable, allowing for independent exploration of the region as you continue toward iconic destinations like Petra and Wadi Rum.

In Sweimeh, you will find formal accommodations consisting largely of international hotel chains and resorts. Some visitors opt for day trips from Amman or Madaba, but a more rewarding experience involves camping near the trailheads. Basic supplies are available in local shops along the route, ensuring you can easily find snacks or meals like a roasted chicken or falafel wrap.
