Discover Mallorca’s Charm with iBestTravel
Divia Thani introduces her recent adventures in the September/October magazine, capturing the essence of traveling through Mallorca.
Arrival in Mallorca
We arrive in Mallorca on a July morning, two days after a heatwave subsides. The Weather app indicates 32 degrees, but it feels like 36. Before arriving, I consult locals, inquiring if visiting is still wise, hoping for a definitive answer. Instead, they respond with, “Yes, it’s hot and humid, and crowded; restaurant reservations and taxis are scarce – but it is BEAUTIFUL!” I’m sold. Recognizing gaps in my travel history, I have determined to explore Mallorca during my four-day getaway.
Exploring Deià
Spoiler alert: I do not indulge in paella at the renowned seafood restaurant by the beach; in fact, my beach time is limited. After a day wandering the picturesque village of Deià, reveling in views from the cemetery atop San Juan Baptista Church, I yearn for the comfort of air conditioning and room service. Consequently, the next day is wisely spent poolside at Grand Hotel Son Net in Puigpunyent. This newly refurbished gem bursts with colors, patterns, antiques, and heirlooms, serving as a lesson in design and harmony.
Enjoying Mallorca’s Delights
The ancient trees lining the pool offer generous shade, while the sound of rustling leaves is drowned out by the loudest crickets I’ve ever encountered. We indulge in countless sorbets and gelatos, guilt-free, captivated by the stunning scenery of Mallorca’s lush greenery and Tramuntana mountains. The local gin, Eva, delivers a refreshing burst of citrus with hints of coriander, perfectly complementing the sunny weather. Our swimsuits dry quickly, ready for more adventures.
Evening Explorations in Palma
As sunset approaches, we venture into Palma, navigating the lively promenade and charming streets lined with quaint shops claiming to be the oldest gelateria or chemist in Mallorca. Among these discoveries are unassuming doors that open to delightful tapas bars, cozy coffee shops, and inviting courtyards with engaging dining options. We are particularly drawn to Fera, where we savor crispy cornettos filled with turbot cream and garnished with caviar. True to our experiences, we wait for an extended period at the taxi stand, deepening our nostalgia as I drift into a light slumber on the way back, reflecting on the day’s pleasures.
A Memorable Departure
As our final day unfolds, I delight in concluding Isabel Allende’s latest work. We indulge in paella topped with fresh red prawns at Son Net’s outdoor restaurant, where the ambiance is enhanced by yellow flowers and soft, starched linens. Great hotel design triumphs in creativity, balancing boldness with a sense of comfort. As we journey to the airport, I remind myself never to cancel a trip, as every journey, even in less-than-perfect circumstances, offers moments of joy and the kindness of unexpected encounters. Remarkably, we find Eva waiting for us in the duty-free shop, a fitting end to a beautiful experience in Mallorca.
