An Unexpected Adventure
Omicron came in like a comet and disrupted our holiday travel plans in Europe. With two weeks available, we needed to decide on a destination. As a devotee of Henry David Thoreau, I firmly believe in “you must make tracks into the Unknown.” Therefore, based on iBestTravel‘s designation of Mexico as the 2022 Destination of the Year, and my fondness for “Shawshank Redemption,” Zihuatanejo emerged as an ideal escape.
Accommodation
A quick online search led us to Casa Chulada in Troncones, a coastal village known for its surfing. Conveniently located just 45 minutes from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport, this five-bedroom house nestled on Troncones Beach offered an affordable paradise experience. The owner, Terri, was readily available for all inquiries, while Mariana, our house manager, provided invaluable local suggestions. Nathalie, our full-time chef, delighted us with homemade breakfast chilaquiles, ceviches for lunch, and marinated dinners.
Shopping
Mariana introduced us to the local food truck, where my children chose fresh fruits and vegetables displayed in the back of a pickup truck. Engaging in conversation with locals allowed them to practice their Spanish while converting dollars to pesos (1 USD = 20 MXN), making our holiday educational as well.
Eating
Indigo is run by an Argentinian couple, Consuelo and Ramon, offering an extraordinary dining experience highlighted by an enormous ribeye steak and heavenly burgers. However, the real gem is Panaderia El Buen Gusto, where Ramon crafts delectable pastries. The morning baguettes, cinnamon rolls, and homemade jams are simply extraordinary. If you arrange ahead, Ramon can offer a bread-making class at Casa Chulada for your children, enhancing the culinary experience.
The ‘Heart of Mexico’
Cafe Pacifico features waffles helado, exemplifying the local culinary creativity. Salads, sandwiches, and fresh smoothies complemented our meals, enjoyed under the vibrant bougainvillea.
Lo Sereno emerged as a delightful surprise. Just a short beach walk from Casa Chulada, this boutique hotel encapsulated the essence of relaxation with sunset cocktails and soundscape of waves as my children played in the surf.
Activities
After sunset cocktails, we unexpectedly enjoyed a sunset horseback ride with Octavio Izazaga. The experience, devoid of any safety concerns, was delightful as the docile horses provided the perfect environment for the kids. The beach in front of Casa Chulada offered natural entertainment with boogie boards and a crab-catching bucket.
We visited Petatillo Beach with Turtle Ecotour and participated in a turtle release project with Mr. Felix and his wife, Señora Chucha. The experience reinforced the importance of eco-tourism, and their dedication to nurturing baby turtles was inspiring. Additionally, we learned to make tortillas in Señora Chucha’s kitchen, a skill sure to delight family gatherings back home.
For surfing enthusiasts, Troncones is a gem. Mike Linn of Tsunami Surf offers lessons for all ages. The serene environment, secret lagoon breaks, and other picturesque coves made for an unforgettable surf experience.
La Playa Ropa boasts an array of activities, including banana boating, tubing, parasailing, and beachfront massages. A mere 30-minute journey from Troncones, it is a must-visit for thrill-seekers.
Conclusion
In urban settings, time often feels constrained, but in Troncones, it unfolded invitingly. The opportunity for family connection amidst serene surroundings is unmatched. While I wish to keep this hidden treasure a secret, sharing it is crucial for others to enjoy. Embark on this adventure with loved ones, since the most unforgettable experiences are defined by the company we keep. So, unclasp your adventurous spirit and make the leap!
