Exploring the New Fiat 500 Electric City Car

Earlier this year, an all-new Fiat 500 debuted in Europe as an adorable electric city car. As the successor to the Fiat 500 previously available in the United States, this new EV version showcases a design tailored for urban living. Unfortunately, this innovative vehicle will not be imported to the United States. Furthermore, the recently revealed 500 3+1, which features a small rear-hinged door behind the conventional front passenger door, will also remain unavailable.

The Unique 3+1 Design

This new 500 3+1 stands out from familiar three-door hatchbacks, such as the Hyundai Veloster. Unlike the Veloster, which includes a B-pillar and a front-hinged rear door on the passenger side, the new 500 3+1 eliminates the B-pillar entirely. Consequently, when both doors are opened, there is an unobstructed passage, making it much more convenient for loading large items or small children.

Family-Friendly Features

In Europe, there is a different perspective on vehicle size for family accommodation. The 500 3+1 may be small, but it aims to meet the needs of families with one or two children, making it ideal for running errands around town. It’s important to note that the 3+1 does not increase in size compared to its two-door sibling; it retains the same interior and exterior dimensions. The vehicle simply adds an extra door, resulting in about 66 additional pounds.

Performance and Variants

Aside from its design and practical features, the 3+1 shares characteristics with other new 500 models. It offers various EV motor outputs, starting with a 94-hp motor paired with a 24-kWh battery. This entry-level configuration provides approximately 112 miles of range according to the European cycle. Higher trim options enhance both output and driving range, accommodating diverse preferences. Additionally, a convertible version of the two-door variant is available for those seeking an open-air experience, albeit with the sacrifice of the 3+1’s convenience.
