Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck EV Demonstrator
Ford is no stranger to getting experimental when it comes to taking on Pikes Peak. Last year, Ford Performance built its latest version of the iconic SuperVan based on a Transit EV that set an Open Class record by making the run up the mountain with an 8:47.682 ET. Earlier this year, Ford Performance hinted at its plan to tackle Pikes Peak with an F-150 Lightning-based race truck in 2024, teasing some abstract images of the vehicle.
Introducing the SuperTruck EV Demonstrator
Today, we’re getting a much clearer picture of what Ford Performance refers to as the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck EV Demonstrator. Although the name is lengthy, the unique design and features of this vehicle deserve such an identity. Ford released camouflaged images of the SuperTruck EV ahead of testing, providing us with slightly more detail—though still limited—about the electric vehicle.
Collaboration and Performance Features
Ford Performance announced its collaboration with STARD Advanced Research and Development to create the SuperTruck. This innovative vehicle boasts a wild widebody aerodynamics package along with a massive wing capable of generating 6,000 pounds of downforce at 150 mph. Consequently, this downforce is crucial for enhanced stability and performance during high-speed runs.
Although specific power and torque figures for the SuperTruck EV are still under wraps, Ford did share a video showcasing its presence in action. The sound produced by this vehicle resembles a fierce Gundam mech, hinting at its formidable capabilities. It is anticipated that Ford will release the SuperTruck’s specifications in time for its Pikes Peak run.
Pikes Peak as a Testing Ground
The F-150 Lightning SuperTruck EV Demonstrator is designed as a testbed for electric powertrain research and development. The insights gained during its performance at Pikes Peak are expected to inform software calibration and battery cell chemistry for both production vehicles and future racing applications.
This SuperTruck is the second project related to the Ford F-150 Lightning developed by Ford Performance, following the “Switchgear,” co-developed with RTR racing. Therefore, the question arises: can the SuperTruck surpass the SuperVan’s record from 2023? We will find out when it competes at Pikes Peak on June 23.
