Summary
When it comes to purchasing books in English and various other languages while in Shanghai, there are numerous options available. From international hotels featuring small bookstores in their lobbies to independent stores offering unique selections, readers can find a variety of literary choices. Prices can vary greatly, as there is often no clear rationale behind them. For instance, you might discover a classic paperback for under 30 RMB, while certain children’s books, such as those about Disney Princesses, can cost over 200 RMB.
Amazon operates in China with a dedicated website (amazon.cn) that includes an English option. If you’re able to input your address, many foreign language books are available for purchase, and delivery typically takes less than 24 hours, depending on the title. This is an excellent option for those seeking specific reads, and payment can be made with foreign credit cards or cash on delivery in some instances.
1. The Mix Place
Located at the base of Hengshan Road, near the vibrant Xujiahui neighborhood, The Mix Place is a serene retreat before leaving the lush surroundings of the former French Concession. This charming bookstore and coffee shop have created an inviting, artistic environment for patrons to relax and enjoy their favorite books and magazines over a good cup of coffee.
While the atmosphere is enjoyable, the focus here is on the ambiance rather than a specific title. A noticeable number of visitors tend to capture moments for social media rather than browsing books. The small English language section offers popular novels, while upstairs features an eclectic assortment of art and coffee-table books, including a fascinating book on the history of English textile design, which is rarely found in other Shanghai bookstores.

2. Shanghai Foreign Language Bookstore
Shanghai’s appropriately named Shanghai Foreign Language Bookstore is the largest and one of the oldest bookstores in the area. This extensive, four-story establishment is situated along Fuzhou Road, which is known for its old book and stationery shops. Even if books aren’t on your agenda, it’s worth exploring the surrounding area.
During my last visit, the layout seemed to be in flux; however, the ground floor housed an extensive collection of books on China, as well as travel guides, language learning resources, and a variety of paperback fiction, including numerous classics. A wide selection of cookbooks is also available.
The upper floors focus mostly on Chinese literature, while the fourth floor boasts a large children’s section filled with numerous books and series suitable for both young and older readers. Additionally, there are smaller sections dedicated to German, Japanese, and French literature.

3. Garden Books
Garden Books is a unique bookstore that has garnered a loyal following over the years. Located in a cozy setting, this store offers a plethora of interesting titles.
On the first floor, visitors are greeted with books related to Chinese culture and interests, along with local photography collections. A smaller section is reserved for Chinese language learning materials, nearby is a curated selection of popular fiction and non-fiction, as well as a comprehensive array of design and gardening publications. Additionally, the first floor features a small café that offers Italian snacks, robust coffee, and gelato for those looking to relax.
Venture upstairs to find a delightful space designated for children, providing a peaceful environment for kids to enjoy picture books. Although the collection isn’t vast, it includes several translated Chinese children’s books and well-loved series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Furthermore, there exists a small assortment of German books and publications on Chinese culture.
This bookstore proves to be an excellent escape, particularly on rainy days.
