Looking Glass Lodge: A Serene Escape in Nature
Down an unassuming pathway flanked with redwoods, pines, wild ferns, and bluebells, a magical glass-fronted cabin awaits. It serves as the most idyllic rural escape for frenetic Londoners looking to unwind.
Local residents Lindsey and Rik are the creative minds behind the Looking Glass Lodge. With the expertise of architect Michael Kendrick, their unique project became a reality in October 2022. This modern structure is constructed in a natural clearing within a leafy protected woodland, just outside of Fairlight—a picturesque village in southeast England. Made using raw materials like western red cedar wood, the building beautifully blends into its environment. Tinted electrochromic glass on either side of the house reflects the surrounding forest, meaning passers-by could easily miss this serene hideaway. The expansive glass sliding doors open onto a wooden deck with seating for two, ushering the outdoors inside.
The design details make this space so spectacular—it was even featured on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. From the natural air vents and underfloor heating to the top-notch Sonos sound system that flows seamlessly throughout, the lodge radiates modern comfort. Every piece of Scandi furniture was thoughtfully sourced from nearby stores and local artists.
The interiors are modern and airy, basking in the sunlight that streams through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The open-plan space features a polished cement kitchen counter centrally located, equipped with sleek, top-quality appliances. Enjoy a hot beverage with the Smeg hot chocolate maker or the Stagg Electric Kettle, complete with a digital temperature gauge, alongside beautifully crafted ceramic mugs from a local artist.
The bedroom nook provides a tranquil retreat at the back of the lodge, separated from the living space by grey linen curtains that elegantly retract. Homely touches abound, including a queen-sized bed adorned with linen bedding, bathrobes, a Dyson hair dryer, colorful artwork, and even binoculars for wildlife spotting from bed.
In the far corner of the bedroom, an impressive pebble bathtub offers scenic views of the forest—best enjoyed with bubbles and perhaps a relaxed drink. The cozy bathroom features a two-hosed shower and delightful natural body lotions from Wideye.
Moving to the living area, the most impressive feature is a floating log burner, suspended from the ceiling. Upon arrival, it’s stocked with all the kindling and wood needed to light a cozy fire. Settle into the sofa, put on a vinyl from the retro record player, and feel the stress of urban life melt away.
As evening descends, the glass begins to tint automatically, ensuring privacy. When morning arrives, the glass clears, inviting the gentle chirping of birds and streams of sunlight filtering through the forest canopy as a natural alarm. Coffee pods and herbal teas are ready in the kitchen, perfect for enjoying on the outdoor wooden terrace.
Guests can choose between a relaxed weekend of soaking in nature and unwinding on the terrace, or embarking on outdoor adventures nearby. Various guides provide suggestions for exploring the area. One popular choice is a breezy sea walk along the Fairlight cliffs, leading to the Bale House Hastings Country Park Visitor Centre, which offers delicious homemade cakes and sandwiches. Hastings is a mere 10-minute drive away, featuring several pubs, a farmer’s shop, and the historic town of Rye, ensuring guests leave with a refreshed mindset and newfound relaxation.
