Aquamen: The Underwater Burlesque Experience in Fort Lauderdale
Jimmy “Poseidon” James, a self-proclaimed beach enthusiast from Hollywood, Florida, is making waves as an underwater burlesque performer. With his medium-length curly brown hair, he spends his days surfing and serving as an Ocean Rescue lifeguard in Miami. However, by night, he showcases his talent as part of the Aquanauts at The Wreck Bar located in the iconic B Ocean Resort in Fort Lauderdale.
Unique Performances at the Wreck Bar
As the first all-male underwater burlesque troupe in America, the Aquanauts perform weekly shows at the Wreck Bar, which has a rich history dating back to when the hotel was known as the Yankee Clipper. This venue was once a favorite spot for Hollywood legends like Marilyn Monroe.
Designed to resemble the interior of a shipwreck, the Wreck Bar features square windows that allow the audience to watch the performers in action. Despite the decline of porthole bars in South Florida since the 1960s, the Wreck Bar is one of only two remaining venues that host such unique performances. All shows can be enjoyed with a food and beverage minimum of $30.
Show Schedule and Diversity
The Aquaticats, another group performing at the Wreck Bar, offers family-friendly entertainment and adults-only aqua burlesque acts, including a delightful Mermaids and Mimosas brunch on Sundays. The Aquamen Underwater Burlesque Show takes place on Thursdays, where the energetic Aquanauts, led by Anderson, showcase their diverse talents.
The Performers
The Aquanauts consist of an eclectic mix, including a school teacher, a shark diver, and two Polynesian dancers—all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the show. Anderson amusingly mentions, “Those guys use more conditioner than I’ve ever seen.”
The popularity of these underwater burlesque shows has even led to the introduction of a Wednesday night co-ed show named Sirens & Sailors, catering to those seeking a more sensual aqua ballet experience.
Experiencing the Show
Before joining the Aquamen, Jimmy was familiar with mermaid shows but had never participated. He explains, “I joined the Aquamen because it was unlike anything I had heard of, especially since it was outside my comfort zone.” His signature move, the upside-down shirt pop, is popular with audiences, emphasizing his cool, calm persona.
James explains that despite being underwater, he can hear the audience and feel their energy, which encourages bolder performances. The inclusive nature of the shows ensures that people of all ages and genders have a memorable experience. Anderson has a special fondness for celebrating “old lady birthdays,” making sure the performers acknowledge these milestones during the shows.
