Once a 16th-century hideout and a seventies disco, Forte San Giorgio – a restored citadel on a rugged Tuscan island – can now be taken over as the perfect setting for your next getaway.
Even on the day we left, we were still uncovering new rooms in Forte San Giorgio. The yoga space, with its windows framing a mesmerizing sea-sky view reminiscent of a Rothko painting, captivated us. Moreover, we discovered a delightful secret apartment with a private balcony, originally the house manager’s pad. Most surprising of all was the ancient, barrel-vaulted cistern we stumbled upon, which once served as the only water source during the fortress’s many sieges.
Location and Ambiance
Il Castello, as the locals call it, stands proudly over the harbor and main village of Capraia, a ruggedly beautiful Tuscan island positioned closer to Corsica than to the Italian mainland. This ancient citadel rises from a volcanic rock formation that drops sharply into the sea, teeming with boulder-strewn shores and covered in prickly pears. It’s a unique vantage point where you can gaze down at seagulls and falcons suspended effortlessly in the winds.

A rock-hewn entrance stairwell leads to a cluster of understated, solid buildings painted in shades of pale ochre. In a gleaming kitchen, Florence-based chef Françoise creates unforgettable meals using seasonal produce and the fishermen’s daily catch, generously sharing her culinary insights with interested guests.

The property includes a billiards room, table tennis, and a spacious game den designed for recreation. Whether you unwind in drawing and dining rooms, enjoy the sun on hidden terraces, or explore herb gardens, each space offers comfort and relaxation.
