Explore Iconic French Architecture Replicated Across China

Exploring Parisian Architecture Replicated in China

China has long had a fascination with Europe, particularly its renowned architecture. Consequently, over the years, numerous replicas of iconic landmarks and buildings have emerged across various locations in China. A photographer from France, François Prost, has initiated a project that documents these Chinese copies of Parisian buildings and landmarks, presenting them alongside the originals.

Journey to Tianducheng

The unique project led François Prost to Tianducheng, also known as Sky City, a substantial suburb of Hangzhou, located 200km from Shanghai. This city features a 100m high replica of the Eiffel Tower, which is three times smaller than the original. In fact, Tianducheng has drawn inspiration from Paris’ famed architecture, showcasing a 31km squared neighborhood modeled after the distinguished Haussmannian Parisian blocks. The attention to detail is evident in the façades of apartment buildings, statues, streetlamps, fountains, and sculptures.

Curiosity Behind the Architecture

“Behind the architecture, I think I was very curious about how people live in a place built with the exact same appearance as another. However, apart from the architecture, there is little connecting these two places, and I find that an interesting topic,” François Prost remarked about his project.

Capturing Cultural References

This series has been transformed into a book titled Paris, China, published by Hoxton Mini Press. The book showcases images of the Chinese replicas alongside those taken in Paris, including elements inspired by the famous Palace of Versailles, captured by François at Tianducheng.

Interesting Insights on Cultural Appropriation

François expressed, “The subject was intriguing to me, not solely because of Paris, but more so due to cultural references and clichés. I have always been fascinated by the idea of cultural appropriation, like the mini Paris or mini Venice recreated in Las Vegas or Dubai.” Furthermore, additional examples of François’ work can be viewed on his Instagram page.
