Editor's letter on being excited for the future
Louis Aw Sheridan

Years ago, I experienced a life-altering moment during a car crash that should have taken my life. It was my first day of university, and while driving to Manchester along the M1, I was emotionally torn. As I struggled to process leaving my boyfriend behind, the chaotic conditions of the rain made driving increasingly challenging. Consequently, I lost control of my vehicle and was thrust into a surreal out-of-body experience, observing the crash from above. This moment, though traumatic, shaped my perspective on life.

I recount this episode as I ponder whether such experiences happen for a reason. Fast forward 30 years, and I find solace in listening to Chopin in the tranquility of my bath in the afternoon. However, I know there is something deeper at play.

The Liberation of Lockdown

Lockdown presented an unexpected sense of liberation, allowing me to step away from constant scrutiny and expectations. The freedom from previous commitments feels both unsettling and invigorating, like a storm-tossed boat finally finding its anchor. In moments of anxiety, it has been a relief to find myself within these four walls, experiencing a profound release.

Reflections During the Third Lockdown

This latest lockdown stirred memories I thought were long buried, opening a door I had kept closed. There was nowhere to hide from my thoughts, yet instead of retreating, I felt an eagerness to confront them. As I adapt to re-entering society—managing children’s return to school, endless tasks, and social interactions—I realize I may be out of practice. Still, there is a comforting freedom in that realization.

Conclusion: A Journey of Self-Discovery

The question remains: did I survive for a reason, or was it merely a neurological response to trauma? I find myself stepping into a renewed version of myself, free from self-imposed pressures. Embracing my authentic self, I feel enthused about the journeys that await.

This is the new issue of iBestTravel. For everyone spending their time reveling in simple yet meaningful moments, such as enjoying nature while doing community service, there is a shared sense of connection in these experiences.
