2024 Genesis Neolun Concept Electric SUV Overview
Genesis is really going after the image that it’s a European-style, Korean luxury vehicle brand and this Neolun Concept is no exception to that desire. At its heart, the concept is a Kia EV9 in Genesis dressings until you enter its unique cabin. From there, the comparisons end, and the luxury begins to really grab at you. Moreover, it also relies on the principle of “reductive design,” minimizing all its screens save for a single, roll-up display in the dash.
The Genesis Neolun name is borrowed from Greek and Latin with “neo” and “luna” respectively. It’s a large, all-electric SUV and eliminates the B-pillars by way of coach doors, but the rest of the Genesis design language remains intact with its unique lighting treatment that extends into the front cutline of the front doors. Genesis claims that it’s able to integrate B-pillarless coach doors, even in this presumably EV SUV, which enhances accessibility. The Neolun features integrated electric steps to make stepping into the low-slung SUV an even less hassle-filled experience. It is a luxury vehicle, after all, and it elevates the experience of entering the vehicle.
Design Features
Out back, the rear taillights continue the new Genesis design of double bars that extend into the rear quarters, but not so far into the body as the front headlights. The concept is finished in a two-tone color scheme of Midnight Black and Majestic Blue, accented with chrome window trim and large, nearly closed face machined aluminum wheels. The minuscule rearview cameras also provide a modern touch where traditional mirrors would typically set on a US-sold SUV. A final impressive feature is the roof rack, which, when not needed, stores itself in the roof and pops up when required.
Interior Details
Stepping inside, we’re greeted by a rather spartan interior, with only a few switches on the dash, speaker grilles, and not much else. Most of the controls are integrated into the squircle steering wheel. Interestingly, the unique shift lever is positioned prominently above the steering wheel. Although unconventional, it propels the design forward. There aren’t any vents as the Neolun utilizes radiant heating, in much the same way Korean houses utilize a system called “ondol,” allowing heat to flow up from the floors. The floors of this Genesis house, however, are made of real, dark-colored wood. Wrapping the rest of the interior is cashmere in Royal Indigo, while other touch surfaces and seats are wrapped in vintage-inspired leather dyed Purple Silk, completing the luxurious color scheme.
Innovative Technology
Upon entering the Neolun, you will not notice a screen immediately; however, once the entertainment starts, a large roll-up screen rises, adjustable in height. Moreover, the crystal sphere at the center of the dashboard rotates to reveal a central tweeter for enhanced audio experience. The rear seats have their own flexible screen that folds down from the headliner, highlighting the vehicle’s emphasis on passenger comfort. Just to complete the audaciousness of the Genesis Neolun concept, the front seats swivel around, allowing front and rear passengers to converse face-to-face.
Final Thoughts
We’re confident that there are many elements that won’t find their way into the real Genesis large EV SUV. That said, the Neolun serves as a remarkable indication of what a Genesis version of the Kia EV9 will ultimately look like, and it certainly boasts an impressive exterior design.
