Genoa’s Innovative Floating Bridge Set to Open Soon

Genoa’s New Floating Bridge: A Landmark of Innovation

A stunning new minimalist “floating bridge” is in the final stages of construction in Italy, aiming to enhance connectivity in the Liguria region. Following the unfortunate collapse of the Morandi Bridge on 14 August 2018, expedited construction was imperative to reconnect the sides of the city.

Design by Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Designed by the renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the renovation reflects a commitment to modernize Italian infrastructure. Renzo Piano stated, “The new bridge must be simple and straightforward, but not ordinary. It is going to look like a ship moored in the valley; a bright, clear steel bridge.” This innovative structure is set to transform the landscape of Genoa.

Moreover, the new bridge over the Polcevera River represents a crucial junction for future road connections and transportation in Genoa and the Liguria region. It has been designed with aesthetics in mind, aiming to give the illusion of floating. The structure rests on 18 reinforced concrete circular piers, crafted without sharp corners to lessen visual impact and blend with the environment. Additionally, the bridge’s deck is isolated from the piers, enabling it to “breathe” without compromising stability.

Furthermore, a protective glass barrier lines both sides of the bridge to mitigate falls and wind, maintaining visibility. Photovoltaic panels are integrated throughout the deck, generating energy to power lighting, sensors, and systems around the clock. Notably, the maintenance and cleaning of the glass barrier and photovoltaic systems are assigned to robots that traverse the edge of the bridge using rails and drive wheels.

Future Developments

RPBW Architects have indicated that plans are underway for the establishment of a public park in the future, aimed to serve as a memorial honoring the 43 victims of the Morandi Bridge collapse. This initiative underscores the bridge’s significance not only as an infrastructure project but also as a symbol of resilience and remembrance within the community.
