Remembering George Poteet: A Legend in Land Speed Racing
It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of George Poteet, a land speed racer and custom car aficionado whose list of accomplishments is extensive and widely varied across our great hobby. George was 75 years old at the time of his passing, most known for Speed Demon, the world’s fastest piston-driven vehicle and an 11-time winner of the HOT ROD Trophy, an award given to the fastest car during SCTA’s Speed Week competition. He has run over 400 mph more than 50 times in his life, setting 13 SCTA Bonneville records and 6 FIA world records.
George’s other well-known land speed race car is Blowfish, a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda that eclipsed the 300-mph barrier and carries a distinct look thanks to the efforts of Rad Rides by Troy.
Poteet’s life wasn’t always about going fast at Bonneville and El Mirage; he was also known for his custom cars, racking up prestigious wins just like he did on the salt. Over the years, he’s won the Don Ridler Memorial Award and America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, two of the most distinguished car show awards one can earn. The Memphis, Tennessee-based businessman has commissioned custom cars from the best in the business including Rad Rides by Troy, Roadster Shop, Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop, Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop, Cal Automotive, and others.
He will be remembered for his continual pursuit of excellence and inspiring and enabling builders, fabricators, and designers to improve their craft.
