Pug Racing in Germany: A Fun-Filled Event for Dog Lovers

For the past few years, clubs across Germany have embraced pug racing, aiming to showcase these short, stubby animals as an active and engaging breed.

“This isn’t a competitive race,” Angelika Schmorr, owner of a pug named Lulu, told the New York Times at a recent competition in Hamburg. “We are all here just for the fun of it.”

Although pug races have gained popularity across Germany, they are no longer hosted in Berlin. Recently, the capital city announced the end of its competition, according to the German news agency dpa.

The final race, known as the International Pug Meeting, took place after a decade of thrilling events organized by husband-and-wife breeders, Thomas and Beate Zupan. This memorable occasion occurred in August.

The event attracted pug owners and enthusiasts from across Europe, who brought their furry companions to mingle and socialize. The racetrack featured a 50-meter dash with a high-speed camera capturing the action at the finish line to ensure accurate results.

Prizes were awarded not only to the first three finishers but also to the last-place pup, as reported by The Times in London.

While spectators may be disappointed that pug racing is no longer available in Berlin, they can look forward to events in Hamburg, where organizers have recently announced they will reveal the dates for their 2020 races soon.
