Ultimate Guide to Gibraltar: Top Attractions and Best Hotels

Discover Gibraltar: Top Restaurants and Bars

Not since World War II has Gibraltarian guitarist Pepe Roman’s moving number Llévame donde nací ever been so relevant. Once a rallying cry for Gibraltarian communities spread across the globe, the song, which literally translates to ‘Take me to where I was born,’ was revived during global lockdowns as many nationals, including myself, returned home. Today, Gibraltar’s exemplary vaccine rollout has secured its place on the UK’s green list, consequently triggering fresh interest in this British Overseas Territory, so I’m thrilled to be writing about the rocky peninsula I call home.

The Queen once emphasized that Gibraltar was famous for three things: its inviolable strength as a fortress, the loyalty of its people, and the important strategic role it has played throughout history. However, life on the Rock encompasses much more than just politics or the ‘Brits abroad’ image often associated with it.

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Gibraltar

Within its city walls, Gibraltar’s heritage is showcased in the old town, which features a blend of architectural styles shaped by its Moorish, Spanish, and British rulers. Nowadays, it is characterized by a bicultural lifestyle. Here, Llanitos (colloquial for Gibraltarian and the local vernacular) typically start their day with churros at the Piccadilly Garden Bar, followed by a light lunch at family-run Sacarello’s coffee shop. They often conclude with dinner and a movie at the newly opened Queen’s Picturehouse & Eatery in Casemates Vaults.

Dating back to 1817, the British-built bombproof barracks, known as Grand Casemates Square (or simply Casemates to locals), has been transformed into a hub lined with al-fresco cafés that serve as the entry point to vibrant town life. Moreover, the old bastion of Chatham Counterguard—named after the Earl of Chatham, who served as Governor from 1821—has also evolved into a lively strip of open-air restaurants and wine bars. This area is perfect for enjoying tapas at La Bodeguiya, a favorite among locals, and drinks at MyWines, arguably the heart of Gibraltar’s nightlife.
