Streamline Customs with the New Global Entry App

1. Introduction

Millions of travelers in the United States will soon experience faster customs and security processes thanks to a new mobile application.

2. Overview of the New App

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has recently unveiled a smartphone app designed to expedite the security experience for over 12 million members in the Global Entry program. This app is accessible via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store according to a statement from the CBP.

3. How the App Works

For many years, Global Entry has served as a convenient solution for travelers returning to the U.S. from international destinations. Typically, this service requires travelers to use kiosks to scan their biometrics for identity verification. However, this new app allows users to confirm their identity directly from their smartphones.

Using the app is straightforward: travelers simply take a selfie while waiting in the security line, rather than at a kiosk. This image is then matched with previously stored photos to authenticate the traveler’s identity.

4. Enhanced Security and User Experience

According to CBP’s Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner, Troy A. Miller, “The new Global Entry mobile application leverages the latest technologies to enhance security while further improving the travel experience for CBP’s trusted travelers.”

5. Initial Availability at Airports

The app will be initially launched at several major airports across the United States, including:

  • Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport
  • Los Angeles International Airport
  • Miami International Airport
  • Orlando International Airport
  • Pittsburgh International Airport
  • Seattle Tacoma International Airport
  • Washington Dulles International Airport

Furthermore, CBP has indicated that they will assess the initial rollout of the program and make informed decisions regarding future airport expansions.

6. Participation Requirements

To take advantage of the new app, travelers must be registered with the Global Entry program. This program not only offers expedited entry but also eliminates the need for paperwork during customs processes. The fee for Global Entry is $100 for a five-year membership, which includes an application process and an interview with a CBP agent. Additionally, participants gain eligibility for TSA PreCheck, making it a more convenient option compared to signing up for TSA PreCheck separately.
