GM’s 2.8L Duramax Diesel Engine Faces Discontinuation
Just when midsize truck enthusiasts were truly embracing GM’s 2.8L Duramax LWN I-4 engine, it appears that this torquey turbodiesel may be phased out. Along with it, the optional 3.6L V-6 gas powerplant for General Motors’ Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups might also be discontinued.
According to Muscle Cars and Trucks, the 181hp/369 lb-ft “Baby ‘Max” I-4 engine could soon become a thing of the past when production for the next generation of both trucks begins. However, the exact timeframe for this change remains unknown. This report follows GM’s announcement regarding the discontinuation of base-trim Colorados, which are powered by 200hp 2.5L I-4 gas engines, and a significant price increase of approximately $4,000, resulting in the $26,395 Work Truck becoming the new entry-level model.
In place of these engines, GM is reportedly looking to employ a more powerful 310hp/348 lb-ft turbocharged 2.7L engine currently used in the Silverado 1500. This new configuration will likely come with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Consequently, this powertrain change is seen as a balance between the diesel’s and the LGZ V-6 gas engine’s performance, offering an interesting alternative for truck enthusiasts.
However, a pressing question remains: “Why the change?” While we cannot confirm this disheartening news, Muscle Cars and Trucks suggests that GM may abandon its engine manufacturing operations in Rayong, Thailand. Moreover, it is currently uncertain what the future holds for the 2.8L engine in the Chevy Express and GMC Savannah vans, but there is speculation that the 2.7L could also be the sole engine option in those models.
As long-time fans of the compact Duramax since its introduction in 2016, especially with the minor refresh planned for the 2021 Colorado and Canyon models, we sincerely hope this report is merely a rumor. Only time, or confirmation from GM, will unveil the truth.
For those with a vested interest, consider the potential benefits of equipping either midsize truck with the powerful 3.0L I-6 Duramax turbodiesel. This option is currently available in 1500-series pickups and larger SUVs, paired with the ten-speed gearbox, and could significantly enhance performance.
The situation remains fluid, and we will continue to monitor developments closely, eagerly awaiting a definitive statement from GM.
