GM Software Issues: 2024 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon Updates
General Motors is navigating through complex software challenges. Previously, the company halted sales of its all-new Chevy Blazer electric SUV due to related concerns, and it is now postponing deliveries of its 2024 midsize pickup trucks, including the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Details on the Sales Hold
The automaker has provided a statement regarding the sales hold on the Colorado and Canyon. According to Brandee Barker, GM’s vice president of global technology communications, “Certain [model year 2024] Colorados and Canyons displayed intermittent software quality issues, identified during our rigorous validation process. A fix has been identified and is being implemented into vehicles that have begun shipping to dealers.”
Steps Towards Resolution
“We’ve established a world-class software leadership team that is actively addressing these issues in the short term while also enhancing our long-term software development and validation processes. We are committed to ensuring our vehicles meet customer expectations,” Barker elaborated.
Ongoing Challenges
Currently, it remains uncertain how long the necessary fixes will take; however, it appears that solutions are already being implemented. The Blazer EV remains under a sales hold due to software issues, which GM has reconfirmed. The “rigorous validation process” is now part of a newly introduced software quality assurance system, which aims to catch potential problems before vehicles are shipped.
Truck Testing Insights
During the 2024 Truck of the Year evaluation, which saw the Colorado crowned as the winner, minor issues were noted with both the Chevy and GMC models. These problems included a blown axle seal during testing on one truck and a malfunctioning trailer brake controller on another. Only the latter is considered potentially software-related, yet it is important to highlight that the Colorado is an otherwise commendable midsize truck, offering exceptional road performance, robust off-road capabilities, and impressive value.
