Eiffel Tower Gets a Gold Makeover Ahead of 2025 Paris Olympics

Eiffel Tower’s Golden Makeover for the 2024 Olympics

The Eiffel Tower is getting a brand-new look ahead of the 2024 Olympics.

According to reports, the iconic Parisian landmark will undergo a significant facelift in preparation for the Olympic Games set in the city. Over the course of the next several years, crews will meticulously strip away layers of paint and rust, followed by the application of a new layer of gold paint to ensure it shimmers and shines both day and night.

A Long-Awaited Transformation

The tower certainly deserves this upgrade. Originally unveiled in 1889 at the World’s Fair, this landmark has stood the test of time. As noted by Lonely Planet, it has been painted a remarkable 19 times over the years in various bright hues including orange, green, and yellow. Consequently, now is an opportune moment for a thorough cleaning and revitalization featuring an updated brown-yellow color, giving the tower a golden glow.

Architectural Insights

“Why did Gustave Eiffel choose yellow-brown? Probably to ensure the Eiffel Tower harmonizes with the entire city of Paris, characterized by its cut-stone houses made of limestone,” explained Pierre-Antoine Gatier, the chief architect for France’s historical monuments, in an interview with Hong Kong Tatler.

The Cost and Challenges of the Makeover

Patrick Branco Ruivo, the CEO of the company overseeing tower operations, stated, “It’s going to give the Eiffel Tower a bit more of a gold hue than the color that we’re used to seeing, in time for the Olympic Games.” The anticipated cost of this transformation is estimated at €50 million ($60 million). However, it poses significant risks for crews due to the dangers associated with stripping old paint that may contain lead.

Excitement for the Olympic Games

The renovation process is expected to wrap up in 2022, well in advance of the games, thus positioning the Eiffel Tower as a stunning backdrop for the triathlon and open water swimming events, as reported by Time Out. The surrounding area will also emerge as a hub for entertainment events during the games, making the golden makeover all the more significant for visitors and locals alike.
