Summary
- Google enhances its travel search features, enabling train schedule visibility.
- The new train search capabilities are set to expand to more countries.
- Additional features introduced for neighborhood vibes and sustainable travel.
Users can also check the “vibe” of a neighborhood as they’re planning a trip.
Google is expanding its search options when it comes to all things travel, making it easier for travelers to search for trains and even check the “vibe” of a neighborhood in its latest upgrade.
Going forward, Google users will be able to see train schedules and prices simply by searching an origin and destination city in select countries around the world, Google shared with iBestTravel. The new feature is available in several countries, including Germany, Spain, Italy, and Japan.
“For some trips, taking a train might be the more sustainable option, but finding the prices and schedules to get from A to B can take a few separate searches,” Google wrote in a release. “Just query something like ‘Berlin to Vienna trains’ and you’ll see a new module in the search results that lets you choose your departure date and compare the available options. Once you select the train that works best, there’s a direct link to complete your purchase on the partner’s website.”
Searching for a train from Paris to London, for instance, allows users to see a timetable, determine if the train is direct, and find out whether the price is considered low, similar to the flight information Google provides. Consequently, users who wish to travel via train will be directed to the Eurostar website to finalize their ticket purchase.
Moreover, Google anticipates expanding this feature to more locations in the future.
In addition to adding the ability to book trains, Google has introduced new capabilities to its Google Maps platform. Notably, there’s a neighborhood vibe feature that will utilize photos and feedback from the Google Maps community to showcase popular area spots. The company also plans to enhance its live view feature, introduced last year, to allow users to search for amenities while navigating.
Additionally, Google is focusing on sustainable travel, enabling users to filter searches for “low emissions” flights or “eco-certified” hotels.
Although Google is enhancing its search functionality, the company intends to discontinue the ability to directly book air travel through the search engine starting September 30 for most regions, with the United States following suit after March 31, 2023.
