How to Secure Backcountry Camping Permits at Grand Canyon National Park Made Easy

Introduction of New Online Reservation System

The Grand Canyon is enhancing the experience for camping enthusiasts by introducing an online reservation system for overnight backcountry permits starting in 2024. This new system aims to simplify the reservation process, making it easier for travelers to secure their camping spots at Grand Canyon National Park.

Current Permit Process Overview

At present, visitors wishing to camp in areas outside the developed campgrounds on the North Rim or South Rim must obtain a permit. This process requires filling out a form and submitting it via fax, mail, or in person to the Backcountry Information Center. However, the implementation of Recreation.gov will streamline this process significantly.

Permit and Camping Costs

Beginning in 2024, the cost for each permit will be $10, alongside additional nightly charges: a $12 fee per person for camping below the rim and a $4 fee per person for camping above the rim. This is a slight change from the current process, where travelers are charged $12 per person per night for camping below the rim and $12 per group per night for camping above the rim.

Improved Efficiency and Statistics

The new online reservation system is expected to drastically reduce the permit approval waiting period, which can currently extend up to a month. This transition is anticipated to enhance visitor planning and overall camping experience. Last year, over 12,400 backcountry camping permits were issued by the National Park Service, with a limited number of last-minute permits available for popular camping locations such as Havasupai Gardens, Bright Angel, and Cottonwood Campgrounds.
