The structure was built using various wood types without nails; instead, wooden pegs were employed. In addition to its history of distinguished guests, captivating narratives abound. For instance, Frank Baum, the author of “The Wizard of Oz,” spent months at the hotel, where he penned stories and read to children. He even designed the chandeliers still adorning the Crown Room, inspired by the lion’s crown from “Oz.” Notably, Liberace was famously “discovered” while performing for an intimate group in the lounge.

Guests frequently express their fascination with stories of apparitions and unusual occurrences throughout the hotel. Reports of strange noises, mysterious footsteps, and temperature fluctuations are common. Notably, the gift shop has experienced significant activity, where items have unexpectedly flown off shelves and books rearranged themselves. The legend tells of a young woman named Kate Morgan who registered under an alias on Thanksgiving in 1892. After a few days, she tragically took her own life on the steps near the ocean—her story remains a poignant mystery, fueling speculation of illness or heartbreak over a doomed romance. Interestingly, the room where she stayed is the most requested among guests.
Celebrating 130 Years at Hotel del Coronado
The celebratory events for the hotel’s 130th anniversary are set to begin this February with the Icons + Masters Anniversary Gala—a black-tie affair featuring dinner crafted by five distinguished French Master Chefs, including the hotel’s own Patrick Ponsaty and Stefan Peroutka, drawing inspiration from The Del’s classic menus. Additionally, attendees will enjoy a photographic showcase featuring iconic stars captured by celebrity photographer John Russo.
The celebration will reach its peak on the actual anniversary date, Monday, Feb. 19. The Coronado community will unite to join guests and city dignitaries for a complimentary sunset champagne toast, followed by a spectacular fireworks display synchronized to music by DJ Hevrock. To cap off the evening, ticketed guests will indulge in an anniversary dinner at 1500 Ocean, where Chef Ponsaty will present a special menu inspired by the original recipes of The Del’s first chef, Frederic Pierre Compagnon.

Throughout the year, events will continue to entice visitors. From June through August, enjoy the Celebrity Chef Clambake Series, featuring guest chefs yet to be announced. Special events such as a Father’s Day concert on the beach with Gary Sinise and a Fourth of July Del Beach Bash extend the celebrations into summer. On July 11, the hotel will proudly host a San Diego Pride kickoff event, while Beach Polo at The Del is set for Aug. 25 and 26. The Chef Throwdown to Benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation occurs in September, and the Hallo-wine & Spirits Party will provide Halloween festivities on Oct. 27.
The Coronado Island Film Festival, scheduled for Nov. 8-11, will honor the hotel’s cinematic contributions over the years. Conclusively, to mark the holiday season, the hotel will host special events from Nov. 22 through Dec. 31, ensuring the celebrations remain vibrant and engaging for all. Additionally, guests will receive a $130 resort credit with a two-day stay throughout the year.

Even without an overnight stay, visitors can appreciate the Hotel del Coronado’s remarkable offerings. The beach remains open to the public, and many patrons relish delightful afternoons enjoying lunch at Sheerwater with ocean views, sipping refreshing beverages at Sunset Bar or Babcock & Story, or exploring the various shops in the arcade. Guided tours of the Hotel del Coronado are organized by the Coronado Historical Association. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, these informative tours are available five days a week for a fee of $20.
