The Highlands is most well-known for three things: its oddity stores, its stretch of bars, and its diverse selection of restaurants. While most tourists to Louisville head down to Fourth Street Live for a night on the town, locals prefer the vibrant Bardstown Road, which is home to the Highlands’ bars, pubs, and clubs. The following drinking establishments can be found in Louisville’s Highlands.

Akiko’s

Akiko’s is a quintessential hole-in-the-wall bar that is immensely popular in the Highlands. Karaoke is a defining feature at Akiko’s, however, getting your name pulled from the hat to sing can be quite a challenge. During my visit, we struggled to figure out how people knew it was their turn, resulting in a wait of over an hour before leaving without singing. Moreover, Akiko’s offers only beer, inexpensive wine, and Saki, making it less ideal for those seeking cocktails.

Many locals argue that Bambi Bar serves some of the best burgers in Louisville. Although I haven’t tried the burgers myself, I’ve heard such rave reviews that I believe there is truth in those statements. The bartenders are friendly, and the overall ambiance of the bar feels distinctly neighborhood-centered, as opposed to the trendier establishments on Bardstown Road.

Conversely, during non-game nights, the bar tends to be less crowded, although you can still find patrons enjoying wings and drinks.
