Plan Your Hiking Adventure in Samaria Gorge, Crete

Here’s how to plan a vigorous 10-mile hike in Crete that leads to a spectacular beach.

What springs to mind when you think of Greece? Beaches? Blue-and-white villages? Hiking might not be the primary thought, however, Crete, Greece’s largest island, absolutely challenges that perception. It boasts some of the best hiking trails in the country, including the renowned Samaria Gorge. This breathtaking gorge is the second-largest in Europe and has served as a vital source of fresh water for the island.

The gorge hike is ideal for adventure seekers eager to experience nature’s beauty and delve into history. At the core of the gorge lies the deserted village of Samaria, which dates back to the 1300s and once served as a strategic refuge through various conflicts. However, the true reward comes at the end of the hike.

The point-to-point hike begins at an altitude of 1200 meters in the mountain town of Omalos and descends to sea level at the black-sand beach of Agia Roumeli on Crete’s southern coast. In the summer, the Mediterranean invites you for a refreshing post-hike swim.

Covering 16 km (10 miles), the hike takes approximately six to seven hours. For best results, consider planning your journey from Agia Roumeli to one of the charming beach towns along the southern coast. My personal favorite is Loutro, a picturesque cove known for its crystalline waters.

Step 1: Pack Light

See if your hotel can hold onto any excess luggage.

When planning your hike, it’s crucial to pack light. A significant portion of the hike is downhill, meaning the heavier your pack, the harder it will be to navigate. Storing unnecessary luggage at a local accommodation in Hania is a practical option, enabling you to hike with ease.

Step 2: Getting to Omalos

Set out early, regardless of your transportation choice.

Getting to Omalos can be done affordably via public bus services that operate from Hania. Aiming for an early-morning bus will provide ample time to complete the hike and enjoy a refreshing swim at Agia Roumeli.

Step 3: Prepare for the Hike

Be cautious on the gorge’s steep and narrow stretches.

The hike starts with a steep descent; therefore, it’s essential to approach this portion carefully. Along the way, you’ll encounter historic sites and natural beauty, including vibrant oleander flowers, which add charm to the rugged landscape.

Step 4: Ferry to Loutro

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this car-free village.

At the end of the trail in Agia Roumeli, ferries transport hikers to several nearby beach towns, with Loutro being a must-visit. I recommend securing ferry tickets and accommodation in advance to avoid the summer rush, ensuring you experience the tranquility of this unique location.

Step 5: Return Transportation

Plan your return trip by bus.

From Loutro, ferries head to Hora Sfakion, where buses connect to Hania, providing a convenient way to complete your journey through the stunning landscapes of the White Mountains.

If I Could Do It All Again…

One alternative could be to hike in reverse; however, I recommend a shorter loop trail, starting at Agia Roumeli and exploring the gorge’s “end” for a different experience.
