Hobbiton: A Haven for Butterflies and Moths
It seems tourists aren’t the only ones enamoured by the verdant, rolling green hills and wildflowers of New Zealand’s Hobbiton. This famous set has recently been named one of the best spots in the country for butterflies and moths.
About Hobbiton
As featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Hobbiton is located on a 1250-acre sheep farm in the heart of Waikato. This picturesque destination attracts film fans and travelers alike. Recently, a plaque was awarded by the Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand Trust (MBNZT), which recognizes Hobbiton as a commendable example of butterfly habitat. Butterflies thrive on two essential types of plants: a nectar source for the adults and host plants where females can lay eggs. The resulting caterpillars feed on these host plants, leading to a continuous cycle of butterflies and moths.
Cottage Gardening Benefits
According to Jacqui Knight from the Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand Trust, “The type of gardening around Hobbiton would be classified as ‘cottage gardening’. The design is informal and utilizes traditional materials along with dense, colorful plantings. With numerous daisy-shaped flowers, butterflies have plenty of landing spots to sip nectar.”
Certification and Conservation Efforts
Since 2009, the MBNZT has been diligently searching New Zealand for exemplary butterfly habitats. Achieving certification is not automatic; applicants must demonstrate hosting at least three different species along with other essential requirements such as shelter, maximum sun exposure, and a pesticide-free environment.
The positive reactions to this recognition have heightened awareness about butterflies in New Zealand. Jacqui remarked, “The MBNZT is deeply concerned about the decline of native species. As awareness grows, more individuals should appreciate our beautiful butterflies.”
Expressing her excitement about this certification, Lily Craig from Hobbiton stated, “We’re thrilled to be recognized as a great habitat for butterflies. The gardens at Hobbiton play a crucial role in depicting the story of the Shire, and butterflies significantly contribute to the vibrancy of these gardens. Our gardening team respects the insect and avian pollinators and strives to create the best possible environment for them.”
