No one knows what it’s like to prepare for a holiday until they’ve faced packing for a family holiday. If there’s one kind of person that doesn’t like to pack lightly, it’s a tiny person with a precarious sleep schedule and a knack for dirty nappies when you least expect it. However, that doesn’t mean you need to pack everything either. Don’t bother bringing anything you can easily buy at your destination. Nappies are sold everywhere.
With experience ushering our little ones all over the world, we’ve made all the under and over-packing mistakes, so you don’t have to. Therefore, whether you’re set to embark on a long-haul journey or preparing for a European jaunt, here is our edit of what to take on holiday with a baby or toddler.
For Sleep:
A Travel Cot
Most family-friendly hotels and even some Airbnbs will provide cribs and cots. Just make sure to call ahead and reserve them, especially if you’re traveling during school holidays. If having a cot provided for you isn’t an option, consider investing in a lightweight travel cot. The Baby Bjorn travel cot stands out as incredibly compact and easy to assemble, making it our top recommendation.
A Plane Bed
If you’re set to embark on a long-haul flight and know your flight will collide with nap time, you may want to consider a portable mattress or blow-up travel pillow that you can use on the plane. Remember to check ahead with the airline, as some may have restrictions regarding what styles and sizes can be used onboard.
Blackout Blinds
If your little one is experiencing sleep regression or struggles to snooze during the day or on the go, blackout blinds can be a lifesaver. These handy shades will keep your baby in the shade during travel and help promote better sleep.
For Getting Around
A Compact Buggy
It’s no surprise that all young parents appreciate the Yoyo Babyzen. This buggy is a cult classic in urban areas thanks to its lightweight and portable nature, and it’s one of the few buggies that can be folded up and stored in the overhead compartment of planes.
A Baby Carrier
Even if you do plan on bringing your buggy on the plane, it’s still worth packing a baby carrier as well, allowing you to explore the plane hands-free when necessary.
A Changing Bag
While you may get away with just a portable change mat for everyday outings, it’s recommended to invest in a smart and spacious changing bag when traveling. A backpack style offers comfort and practicality on the go, and many come with clever pockets for easy access to bottles and food, along with a portable changing mat.
For Outdoor Activities
Sun Protection
Sun protection is a year-round essential, especially if you’re set to travel during the summer. Always choose a high SPF sunscreen, preferably SPF 50+, in a water-resistant formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Top it off with a hat for additional protection, and if your little one is willing, a pair of polarized sunglasses.
Swimming Costumes and Aids
A trip to the pool or beach is what family holiday memories are made of, so don’t forget to pack tiny swimming costumes. If your little one isn’t toilet trained yet, waterproof nappies paired with a tight swimming costume can ensure there are no accidents. Additionally, add a long-sleeved rash top or suit made from UV fabric for extra protection from the sun and cold.
