Soho House’s Journey and Expansion
Twenty years ago, the private members’ club and hotel for creatives, Soho House, made its American debut in New York City’s Meatpacking District, marking the beginning of a new era of cool and distinction. Notably, even before its official opening, Sex and the City filmed the iconic rooftop pool scene here, which immediately established Soho House’s presence in pop culture.
Now, the British brand operates over 40 locations worldwide, including 14 in North and South America. To commemorate this success, Soho House has announced an ambitious goal of reaching 20 locations in the Americas by 2025.
Introducing Grasmere House
As part of this exciting announcement, the company confirmed a new type of U.S. location: a countryside retreat in Hudson Valley’s Rhinebeck, New York, an area renowned for its vibrant creative atmosphere. Situated on a 250-acre former farm, the Grasmere House will be crafted from restored 19th-century structures surrounding an elegant manor house.
According to the hospitality company, “The design inspiration will reference the romanticism of the nearby woodlands, and incorporate natural elements from the historic Roycroft Arts and Crafts movement in the 1800s.” The serene environment will feature diverse food and beverage options, a wellness facility, a spa, and guest accommodations, all set against the backdrop of the area’s lush landscapes, ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and biking. The Grasmere House is conveniently located about a two-hour drive from Manhattan and just 15 minutes from the Rhinecliff train station.
Local Community and Future Plans
The countryside concept mirrors the U.K.’s Babington House, an expansive 18-acre estate near Bath that boasts 33 rooms in its historic structures and has become a favored retreat for celebrities. This legendary property has hosted notable events such as comedian James Corden’s wedding in 2012 and Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne’s nuptials in 2014, and has also become a beloved getaway for stars such as Courteney Cox.
While the announcement of Grasmere House’s revitalization is a recent development, local authorities have been aware of its transformation for some time. Ronald Hicks, an assistant Dutchess County executive, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “We are very excited by this adaptive reuse project that will see the restoration of a historic manor house and barns in Rhinebeck and attract people from around the world to thoughtfully work, relax, play, and create in our community.” He emphasized the hope of engaging visiting innovators and entrepreneurs to either stay in the community or even establish businesses.
Although no specific timeline for the Rhinebeck estate has been disclosed, several upcoming locations have already distributed their save-the-dates, indicating the brand’s commitment to expansion. Soho House Mexico City is set to open soon in a historic casa located in Colonia Juárez, marking the brand’s Latin American debut. Following that, Soho House Portland will be the first establishment in the Pacific Northwest, opening in November, along with Soho House São Paulo in December. The Miami Pool House in the vibrant Wynwood area is currently in preview mode, while Soho House Charleston is scheduled for a 2024 opening.
Additionally, the company is further expanding its presence in the U.K. with new locations in northern England (Manchester) and Scotland, both poised to welcome guests in 2024.
