Summary
The Global Peace Index Rankings
The Global Peace Index (GPI) has unveiled its annual ranking of the safest countries on Earth. Notably, the United States does not make it into the top 100. However, one tiny and isolated nation has secured the top position as the most peaceful country for over a decade.
Once again, Iceland has been awarded the honor of being the most peaceful country, a status it has maintained since 2008. This consistent ranking highlights Iceland’s commitment to peace and societal stability.
Top Ten Most Peaceful Nations
The rankings are compiled through a collaboration with the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and the GPI. The index evaluates 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, which consider factors such as:
- Level of Societal Safety and Security
- Extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict
- Degree of Militarization
Despite the ongoing global challenges, there are still numerous peaceful places for travelers to enjoy. Following Iceland in the top 10 most peaceful nations are:
- Denmark
- Ireland
- New Zealand
- Austria
- Singapore
- Portugal
- Slovenia
- Japan
- Switzerland
United States Ranking in Global Peace
The five countries rated at the bottom of the index include:
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- South Sudan
- Syria
- Yemen
- Afghanistan
These nations continue to experience various levels of unrest and conflict. As for the United States, it ranks 131st, which is notably low due to factors such as a high prison population rate, extensive weapons exports, and heightened militarization.
Travel Considerations
It is crucial to remember that these rankings do not dictate your travel decisions, as choosing destinations is ultimately a personal choice. Travelers are encouraged to consult the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories for guidance and to understand the differences between a travel alert and a travel advisory.
